With so much going on during your wedding day, it’s no wonder that newlyweds forget to do some of things that may help them enjoy their wedding even more.
Everyone will tell you that your wedding will go by in a blur. There is just so much going on. You may have a tight timeline and a lot of people to coordinate with. Even if you’ve planned well, and have communicated everything with everybody, there is still a lot that will fall on you. You’ll get pulled from one thing to the next, and before you know it, the wedding will be over.
This is why it’s so important to be aware of things newlyweds forget to do during their wedding. Things that will make them more comfortable. Things that will ensure that their wedding is super special. The types of things that allow them to create memories, and minimize any wedding day regrets. None of these things are particularly difficult, they just may be easy to forget.
10 Things Newlyweds Forget To Do During Their Wedding
Knowing what newlyweds may forget on their wedding day will help you make sure you don’t forget them. This many mean delegating the remembering of these things to a family member or friend. Or it may mean setting aside time before or during the wedding to make sure it happens. In some cases, you’ll even have to – gasp – adjust your wedding day schedule.
I promise you, though, that if you intentionally remember do to each of these things, your wedding day will be more special.
Here we go!
1. THEY FORGET TO EAT FOOD & DRINK WATER
Everyone who has ever gotten married will tell you this one.
Your wedding day goes by in a big blur. It’s so easy to forget to actually eat your meals and hydrate because of all the action. However, without eating and drinking, you’ll surely become fatigued, dehydrated, and maybe even downright cranky. This is why it’s super important to either plan your meals ahead of your wedding day, or ask a friend or family member to make sure you’re eating and drinking water all day.
2. NEWLYWEDS FORGET TO GIVE THEIR PHONE TO A FRIEND
Now, you may not be planning on holding your cell phone as you’re walking down the aisle. In fact, you shouldn’t do that.
You may, however, want to have your phone handy. And, if you’re in a wedding gown, it may not be feasible to keep it around. You may not want to carry a purse, and your dress probably doesn’t have pockets. Maybe this is fine with you, and you’re completely prepared to be away from your phone for your entire wedding. But maybe, you might want your phone from time to time.
To have the best of both worlds with this one, ask a friend to hold onto your phone. Tell them you may look for them throughout the wedding to go and grab it. You may even want them to monitor your phone for you, responding to things as they come in and filtering messages, so you don’t have to worry about it.
3. THEY FORGET TO SIGN THEIR MARRIAGE LICENSE
Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking. Who would do this?
Well, us. Yes, at our wedding we almost forgot to sign the marriage license. We asked a friend to officiate our wedding, and while she had signed the license and given it back to me to sign and file, we forgot to do so until very late into the night. We also had to make arrangements for it to be properly sent to the county so it could be filed while we were on our honeymoon. Each of these things were a total after-thought after such a busy day.
If your officiant is not a professional at it, pay attention to this one. You may have to do some extra steps to sign and send your marriage license for them. And you don’t want to forget to do so!
4. NEWLYWEDS FORGET TO WRITE & GIVE LETTERS TO LOVED ONES
Writing letters to your loved ones on your wedding day is such a sweet and thoughtful touch.
These letters could be to your future spouse, your future in-laws, your parents, or anyone who you would like to thank and make promises to on your wedding day. They don’t have to be over-thought, and they don’t have to be a crazy effort. The point is that you plan ahead to actually write these letters and make sure they are delivered on your wedding day to the right people.
To make this happen, plan on writing the letters ahead of your wedding. Then, bring them with you to the wedding and have a point person deliver them to the correct recipient. I promise, if you’re intentional about this, you’ll never regret making it happen.
5. THEY FORGET THAT THEY WILL HAVE TO PACKAGE UP GIFTS
When you arrive at your wedding, chances are you will have a lot of stuff with you.
While you may or may not be taking these things back with you when you leave your wedding, one thing is for sure. If you’re having a wedding with a decent amount of guests, you will have presents to take home with you. Not only will you have to remember to take these home, or back to where you are staying, but you’ll have to have a way to do so.
The actual transport of gifts can be an undertaking. You may be taking a ride share or taxi back to a hotel room. Or, you may be in a vehicle that already had limited space. Whatever your plan is for your wedding, when you think about how you will leave, plan for your gifts as well. Decide who can help you transport them, where they will go after the wedding, and how you will get them back to your home when you’re there next.
6. NEWLYWEDS FORGET TO TAKE PRIVATE MOMENTS TOGETHER
With your wedding day going by incredibly fast, a bunch of guests vying for your attention, and a tight schedule, it’s no wonder that newlyweds often forget to take private moments together.
How sweet would it be, if after you were married, you two had a few minutes to yourselves. Where no one is around you, including your photographer? Just a time for you to really soak in what just happened. You may even want to spend the time strategizing or making intentions for the rest of the wedding. No matter how you spend the time, it’s really about what works best for you.
While you may actually remember that this is something you want to do during your wedding, it may be difficult to make happen. So, plan ahead. When you create your wedding day schedule decide when and if this is something you want to build in. It may be a few minutes before the ceremony, or during cocktail hour. It could even be a couple of minutes that you agree to step away from the dance floor and reconvene when you’re ready.
7. NEWLYWEDS FORGET TO TAKE A MOMENT TO PAUSE
With so much going on, it’s very hard to take a moment to breath, take a mental photo, and just absorb your wedding while it’s going on.
This is why so many newlyweds forget to take a moment to pause. This moment is one where you can stop and look around. You can make note of what you notice. You can experience your senses, one by one. This is a moment, or multiple moments, that you will remember and take with you well after your wedding day. So, before your wedding, remind yourself to make them happen.
8. THEY FORGET TO BRING COMFORTABLE SHOES
One thing is for sure. If you’re able to stand, you will be doing a lot of it on your wedding day. And, your feet will pay a price for it.
Chances are you are wearing new-ish and perhaps uncomfortable shoes at your wedding. They may have heels, and they may be more about aesthetics than comfort. Unfortunately, once all the formalities are complete, the photos are taken, and it’s time for the dance floor, your feet may be aching for you to sit back down.
This is why thinking ahead and bringing extra shoes to your wedding is crucial. Bring something you know your feet will appreciate. At a certain point, it really doesn’t matter what your feet are wearing. Even sneakers, slippers, and flip flops are all up for grabs in the name of staying comfortable.
9. THEY FORGET TO CHECK IN FOR THEIR FLIGHTS
This may not be applicable to everyone, but if you’re flying immediately after your wedding, it’s important to remember to check in for your flights.
Depending on the timing, and the airline, you may miss out on good seats, or even boarding your flight, if you forget to check in online. And no one wants to start off their marriage with travel drama. So, if your plan is to fly within 24 hours of your wedding, look up what’s required of you. If you need to do something at a certain time, either set a time to make it happen, include it in the wedding day schedule, or delegate to a trusty family member or friend.
10. NEWLYWEDS FORGET TO DESIGNATE A POINT PERSON
This brings me to the last thing that newlyweds forget to do on their wedding day.
For all of the previous suggestions, and much more, designate a point person who will help you not forget and to ensure certain things get done. Ask someone you trust to field all questions, coordinate with guests, and make arrangements on your behalf. By doing so, you’ll help your wedding day go much smoother and also it will help prevent the small but important stuff from being forgotten.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
There you go, friends. Hopefully this has been a friendly reminder to plan for and remember any of the above items that you do not want to forget on your wedding day. When in doubt, work the item into your schedule. Or, ask a trusted designed point person to ensure it happens. Your wedding day experience will be much better and less stressful that way.
