A few months ago I wrote a post on skincare myths. In it, I outline some common skincare myths out there, and what the actual truth is. The thing is, we all have skin. And, we all need to care for it in some way or another. It may be the products we use, the food we eat, or the myths we believe.
The more truth you know, the better your skin will be. As your biggest organ, taking care of your skin is a good thing. Plus, if you’re engaged, having great skin is doubly important. Not only will you look and feel fabulous on your wedding day, you’ll be set up for great skin for the rest of your life. Knowing more skincare myths, and the truth, will only help you set the foundation for later.
11 MORE Skincare Myths You Need To Know Before Your Wedding
This post is going to share with you eleven more skincare myths you need to know before your wedding. It will review more skincare myths about products. It will go over skincare myths about acne. Plus, there are extra myths about specific skin types and the care needed for them. As a reminder, I’m not a medical professional. I’m not an aesthetician. I’m just a clean beauty advocate who has done lots of research in the last few years.
Let’s get into it!
MORE SKINCARE MYTHS ABOUT PRODUCTS
This section will review more skincare myths about products. I share the tips in this section as someone who uses a lot of products. Some are treatment-based products. Some are meant to prevent issues. I’ve done extensive research on what is in my products, and how they will work for my skin. I suggest that you take these myths and truths, and do the same.
1. MYTH: CHEMICALS ARE NOT OKAY IN YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS
First things first, let’s talk about chemicals.
In general, chemicals are okay to use in skincare products. Shocker, I know. Not all chemicals are created equal, though. Some chemicals are known to be carcinogens. Others can disrupt your hormones. Still others are unethically sourced. However, others aren’t so bad. There are preservatives in most skincare products. Many preservatives are totally safe to use. And, products need active ingredients for your skin. Of course, some ingredients are “naturally sourced”, but some are synthetic chemicals.
My suggestion? Do some research about your products. I like the EWG app, which will scan your products and let you know if the chemicals are safe or not. Try it out and see what you find out.
2. MYTH: FRAGRANCE IS FINE IN YOUR PRODUCTS
Girl, we need to talk about fragrance.
If you see the word “fragrance” on any of your products, chances are your product is hiding some secrets. Fragrance is a skincare label loophole. It’s a catchall term that can hide icky ingredients. And, those ingredients can be harmful to your skin. For sensitive skin, fragrance can cause irritation or even eczema. It can also create allergens and uncomfortable reactions.
When in doubt, go fragrance-free, or buy products with transparent ingredients.
3. MYTH: CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN IS BETTER THAN MINERAL
How much do you think about sunscreen? A lot? Probably not, and that’s okay.
Did you know there are two types of sunscreen out there? Chemical, and mineral. And, one is definitely better for your skin than the other. Chemical sunscreen is absorbed into your skin. It comes with a bunch of ingredients and chemicals, with little recognition for their impacts on your skin. Certain locations in the world, particularly next to reefs, have banned it’s use altogether. If chemical sunscreen can hurt a reef, imagine what it’s doing to your skin.
Mineral sunscreen is different. It lays on your skin and reflects the sun’s rays. It’s just as effective, and can be made with safer ingredients. When it comes to safer skincare, mineral beats chemical.
4. MYTH: BURNING AFTER PRODUCT USE MEANS IT’S WORKING
Oh, have you ever used a product and felt the burn? Did you get the impression the product was really working? Yeah, me too.
The thing is, burning after use isn’t great. It doesn’t necessarily mean a product is working. It means that your skin is having a reaction. Perhaps you have an allergy to the product. Or, your skin is super sensitive for what the product is doing to it. Either way, burning isn’t the goal. A little tingle is fine, but if you have burning, you may want to discontinue usage.
5. MYTH: NATURAL SKINCARE PRODUCTS ARE BETTER FOR YOU
I’m about to dispel some more skincare myths on natural skincare products. This is a biggie, because everything seems to be “natural” these days.
The problem with natural is that it’s not well defined. I mean, everything can be from nature, right? As mentioned before, natural doesn’t take into account allergens. It doesn’t take into account harsh ingredients, carcinogens, hormone disruptors, or unethically sourced components. Natural is a blanket term that doesn’t mean much, really.
The key is to know what is exactly in your products and then make the right choice for you. Again, EWG can help you figure out what’s right.
6. MYTH: THE LESS PRODUCTS YOU USE, THE BETTER
Who told you that water was the only product you needed? Well, they were lying to you.
Look, the goal isn’t about going crazy with products. No, you shouldn’t put everything and anything on your skin. But, you may be doing yourself a disservice if you’re keeping things as minimal as possible. There are some great serums out there that can help with the most troublesome of skincare issues. Plus, products can build on each other. Cleansers will help toners, which will then help serums and moisturizers. Always look into what you’re using as a package, rather than individual products.
MORE SKINCARE MYTHS ABOUT SPECIFIC SKIN TYPES AND NEEDS
Last bit, friends. This is about specific skin types and what they may need. Remember, everyone’s skin is different. What works for my skin may not work for yours. It’s essential for us to know what our type of skin is so we can address our specific needs.
7. MYTH: OILY SKIN MEANS YOU CAN SKIP MOISTURIZING
One would think that if their skin is oily, they should stop using moisturizer. After all, the moisturizer will just make their skin more oily, right?
Well, this is another skincare myth.
The truth is that moisturizer can help regulate oil production. And, not using a moisturizer can cause your skin to create more oil. With the right balance of moisturizer, mixed with any needed acne treatments, your skin can remain supple but not oily. Plus, moisturizer provides a protective barrier for your other products.
8. MYTH: STRESS CAUSES ACNE, AND REDUCING STRESS WILL MAKE IT GO AWAY
This skincare myth comes with a caveat. Stress, when it is so bad that your hormones go a bit haywire, can cause your pores to get clogged, which creates acne. This is especially true if you’re predisposed to acne anyway.
You should treat your stress related acne in a few different ways. For example, a solid skincare routine. Acne treatments that contain salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinols may help. And, you’ll need to manage stress. This means taking time to relax. Getting enough sleep and exercise. Talk to a professional if it all gets real bad.
9. MYTH: DARK SKIN MEANS IT’S OKAY TO SKIP SUNSCREEN
Let’s talk a bit about people of color who have dark complexions. Yes, you may have a built-in sun barrier that fair skinned people lack. However, you are not immune to the sun.
If you have dark skin, you still need sunscreen. Every time you’re in the sun for more than twenty minutes or so. Even if your skin may not showcase a sunburn, it is still possible to get sunburned, no matter your skin tone. Plus, sun damage can occur whenever our skin is exposed. And, anyone can get skin cancer.
If you feel like mineral sunscreens are too streaky on your skin, try a new brand. Yes, historically, mineral sunscreens left a white residue, but they’ve come a long way. I’ve found ones that are meant for the face that blend in particularly well.
10. MYTH: SENSITIVE SKIN MEANS YOU SHOULDN’T EXFOLIATE
There are a lot of skincare myths when it comes to sensitive skin. I should know, because I used to believe them.
When you have sensitive skin, the kind that is prone to dryness, redness, and irritation, or the kind that will break out easily or react with a vengeance to the tiniest thing, you’re pretty cautious about what you’ll put on it. Rightfully so, too. And, when it comes to exfoliators, things can be pretty tricky. It’s easy to ignore the fact that your skin may need some exfoliation so moisturizers can nourish and protect it. And, it’s easy to forget that there are multiple types of exfoliators.
Harsh, physical exfoliators may not be the best for sensitive skin. I’m talking about scrubs, or anything that is bumpy and will rough away skin cells. However, a gentle chemical exfoliator that dissolves skin cells may be your friend. They may even leave your skin nourished and cleansed in a way you didn’t even know was possible.
11. MYTH: MOLES CAN MOSTLY BE IGNORED
More skincare myths about moles, busted.
Moles are a big deal. Even moles that you’ve had “forever”.
Of course, the biggest concern with moles is that they are cancerous. And, if they have abnormal margins, irregular boarders, different colors, or a strange shape, there is more cause for concern than if they don’t. However, any mole can be cancerous, even the ones that seem innocuous.
Your best bet to combat mole concerns? Pay attention to your body. Take photos of moles, and compare them to new photos of the same mole every six months. And, get a professional body check once a year. Catching issues early, paying attention, and staying out of the sun are your allies.
THOUGHTS ABOUT MORE SKINCARE MYTHS
Friends, I hope you learned a few things in this post about more skincare myths. I know there’s a lot of information out there. And, sometimes things are subjective per person and skin type. However, there are some universal truths that everyone should know, especially if they are planning a big event like a wedding. Remember to check with your dermatologist or aesthetician if you have real concerns, and always wear a good mineral sunscreen. Happy skincare planning!
