Have you realized yet that there really are fun wedding planning tasks to share with your partner?
I think everyone can agree that not every wedding planning task is glamourous or even remotely fun. In fact, that’s why wedding planning can often become overwhelming and stressful. And it’s okay not to enjoy every aspect of it. When you have to list out a bunch of things to take care of, and you don’t particularly enjoy any of them, well, it’s awful. However, it’s not all bad. And, a lot of it is even more fun when you share it with someone else.
Including your partner in fun wedding planning tasks can be a great way to bond, get tasks crossed off your list, and also enjoy each other. Sometimes the collaboration can even bring the two of you closer. Your partner may gain a bigger appreciation for you, and what you’re doing to help create a wedding you will both love. You may even also be able to form some fun memories while you’re at it.
12 Fun Wedding Planning Tasks To Share With Your Partner
This post is going to walk you through fun wedding planning tasks that are best to share with your partner. From music-related items, to collaborations, decision making, and even items you really can’t do with out them, this should be a pretty comprehensive list. Keep in mind that there are more items that may be applicable to different couples, depending on your situation. Also, some of these items may not be a part of your wedding, and that’s totally okay, too.
Here’s are the fun wedding planning tasks to share with your partner:
1. Engagement Photos
Now, it’s pretty clear that you will need your partner to be with you should you choose to have engagement photos.
Having engagement photos taken aren’t for every couple, but they do have some benefits. Firstly, they allow you to get to know your photographer. This is a great thing if they will be the same person taking photos at your actual wedding. Secondly, you can use them for save the dates, thank you cards, and invitations. Thirdly, they can be used as décor around your wedding.
When it comes to having fun at the actual engagement photo shoot, there are lots of ways to enjoy yourselves. Finding a cool location, including personal props, and dressing up are all ways to showcase your personality. Your partner and you may have never had a professional photo shoot together, so you can enjoy this new experience, too.
2. Plan Pre-Wedding Events
Many people don’t realize this when they start planning their wedding, but there are a lot of pre-wedding events to think about.
Engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelorettes, bachelor parties, rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, and thank you brunches all come to mind. Now, you may not have some (or even all) of these events before your wedding. However, if you are considering any of them, think about your involvement in planning them and if you can include your partner. The two of you can discuss your vision for each one, when they work for your schedule, where they should be held, and who would be included. Once you have the basics discussed, you can go into ways to make them more fun or memorable.
3. Plan Your Honeymoon
Who doesn’t love planning a trip?
Even if neither of you are real planners, you should be able to enjoy choosing a destination to go to with your future spouse. Discussing what you want and do not want, when you would want to go, and what you would want to do on your honeymoon are crucial. You may even have fun researching the tiny details. It can be enjoyable to plan items like where you’ll eat and what activities you’ll do once you’re there.
Either way, this is a definitely wedding planning task to share with your partner. Unless, of course, one of you wants a complete surprise!
4. Food & Beverage Tastings
Seriously, the first fun wedding task to share with your partner that comes to mind is definitely food tastings.
This could apply to so much. Dinner options, appetizers for cocktail hour, and definitely desserts and cakes are all usually tried by couples prior to a wedding. Tastings may also apply to beverages, such as wines or mixed drinks. Depending on where you are getting your wedding food and drink from, the provider may have tastings as part of their package. Or, you may have to create your own tastings by ordering food ahead and deciding what you like. Either way, this is a huge wedding task to definitely share with your partner.
If you are making your own food or beverages, you can work on this together and pick out what you like the most. Taking a class together, doing research, and practicing can all be very fun tasks to do as a couple.
5. Create A Playlist
From your ceremony, right up until the end of the night, chances are that your wedding will have a lot of music in it.
Yes, you may have a band or DJ who is in control over most of the tunes. However, you may also have specific songs to play as you walk down the aisle, have your first, dance, or just really enjoy. And when it comes to choosing those songs, each partner in the relationship should be involved. Listening to the music and imagining it at your wedding can be a super fun wedding planning task. Plus, you may need to practice that first dance and see what fits your style best.
Just as important as picking the right songs, you can both discuss songs or artists you don’t like. You may even learn a little bit about each other. Bouncing ideas, and listening to the other’s suggestions and opinions can help you not only complete this wedding planning task, but also understand how music has influenced the other’s life.
The great thing about this task is you can do it early in the wedding planning process, and iterate as time goes on. So, if you enjoy it, keep creating that playlist until you both have something you love.
6. Accessory Shopping
This wedding planning task is only fun for the right people, but it’s worth mentioning.
If you both enjoy shopping, looking for accessories for your wedding day outfits can be a fun wedding planning task to share. Picking out ties, shoes, socks, and belts can all be a bit overwhelming if you’re doing it yourself, or if you have strong opinions, so enjoy this task together. You may also want your partner to be there when you decide on your jewelry or hair accessories.
This task can also apply to the outfits and accessories that others will wear at your wedding. For example, you’ll want your wedding party members to look cohesive. Also, you may have some thoughts about what your parents are wearing. Alternatively, you may include your dog, or another pet, in your wedding, and picking out their outfit can be super fun.
7. Write Your Vows
When it comes to writing your own wedding vows, it’s a very subjective wedding planning item depending on the couple and they type of ceremony they want.
You may be totally dependent on your officiant for your vows. Or, you may be very into writing your own. One of you may want to take the lead, or both of you can have fun sharing this task. If you want to share this task together, start with a guideline that you will each use. You can look up quotes, verses, or promises to include. Together, you can discuss stories or sentiments you may want to share.
Mapping out your vows together, and creating something that works for both of you, can be very bonding and a super special experience.
8. Design The Ceremony
So you may or may not be into writing your own wedding vows, but chances are you can share designing your ceremony with your partner.
It could be fun to decide the details of your ceremony together. For example, you could pick out quotes or songs for others to share during the ceremony. Or, you can decide how everyone will enter or exit the space. Of course, it can be fun to determine entry and exit music together as well. You can each talk about the logistics of the ceremony, too. Deciding how you will actually get married will cross a huge task off the list.
9. Buy Gifts For Others
As seen in this recent post, there may be a few gifts that you’ll want to buy for others as a thank you, when you get married.
If you find that you’ll need to buy some gifts, doing the shopping can be a fun wedding planning task to share. Buying gifts for your parents, wedding party, and even vendors may be part of your wedding planning. The two of you can look online together, bounce ideas off each other, and decide on an appropriate budget. You can physically go shopping, and make a day of it, complete with a lunch date. Together, you can do what works best for your situation.
10. DIY Projects
There will definitely be the opportunity for you and your partner to share DIY projects leading up to your wedding. And they can be really fun to create together.
Seating charts, signage, décor, or an arbor all come to mind as larger DIY wedding projects. These usually take at least two people to execute. You can even come together to create centerpieces, favors, and programs. Depending on your skillsets, one of you can design or conceptualize the piece, while the other actually creates it. I shared some DIY projects with my partner before my wedding, and we still have them all as memories of items we worked on together.
11. Register For Gifts
Here is a recent post all about wedding registries, but this is a task that you will definitely want to share with your partner.
When you create a wedding registry, it’s so important to collaborate. What would they want to upgrade or replace once you’re married? What do they wish they had in their home? Working with your partner to decide what to register for should be a team effort. These gifts are theoretically for the both of you. Even if you’re having a micro wedding, you may still get wedding gifts, and working on this task is definitely something to share.
On another note, chances are you’re going on a honeymoon at some point, and many non-traditional wedding registries will allow couples to register for experiences. So, knowing this, make sure to work with your partner on the registry.
12. Practice Your First Kiss
For the final fun wedding planning task, you’ll definitely need your partner.
Together, you and your partner can plan how the first kiss will go. You can discuss what to expect, maybe practice a dip, and see what works for both of you. If you’re planning on doing something unexpected or fancy, definitely review it with your partner. You don’t have to complete this wedding planning task over and over, but you should have a general idea and comfortability leading up to the wedding for the first kiss.
On another note, make sure to put it in your “designing the ceremony” plan to let the officiant know to move out of the way during your first kiss. Your photos will be so much more amazing.
