So you want to make a wedding time capsule. Awesome!
Time capsules can be a thoughtful way to preserve a memory or space in time. They are a collection of items or statements that relate to a moment. Wedding time capsules make sense when you think about it. Chances are that you intend to be married for a very long time, right? Why not do a sort of “snapshot” of your wedding day that you can look back on for decades to come?
The great news is that creating a wedding time capsule does not have to be a big lift, if you don’t want it to be. All you need is some inspiration about what should go in your time capsule. Just receiving a few relevant ideas can help you collect what makes sense for you and your partner. Remember, a time capsule is a collection of items or thoughts. You can place them in a box, canister, jar, or whatever works for you. The idea is to make your wedding time capsule your own.
12 Items For Your Wedding Time Capsule
This post is going to share with you twelve items for your wedding time capsule. Not every item will work for every couple. Take some time and decide what kind of items are best for your situation. Perhaps collecting certain items from your wedding is good enough. Or, you may want to write some things down, or collect stuff from your wedding day, not just your wedding. Again, do you. A wedding time capsule is what you make of it.
Let’s get into it!
1. PHOTOS FROM THE WEDDING
Starting with the most obvious, your wedding time capsule can include photos from your wedding.
Now, of course, you can expand these photos to include more than just your wedding. Perhaps you have photos of your bridal shower, bachelorette party, engagement party, or rehearsal dinner. Maybe there are some candid photos you’d never post to social media but are still fun to hold on to included. Pick a few and put them in your time capsule to look at later on.
2. A NEWSPAPER FROM THE DAY YOU GOT MARRIED
Remember earlier when I mentioned that you could collect items that are not from your wedding, but from around your wedding? A newspaper is a perfect example of this.
These days, most people get their news digitally. But, newspapers still exist. Ask a trusted guest to grab one on your wedding day. Keep the whole thing, ads and all. You can edit it later on, but think of it as a snapshot in time.
3. DRIED FLOWERS FROM YOUR BOUQUET
One thing I didn’t keep from my wedding, but kind of wish I did, was flowers from my bouquet.
I’m not suggesting that you keep your whole bouquet. But a few flowers, or a few petals, is not a big lift. It’s easy to place them out, let them dry (maybe upside down?), and then put in a safe protective container like a jar for your wedding time capsule.
4. YOUR VEIL
I can’t find my veil. I wish I could, and I feel like it’s somewhere in my house, but I really can’t find it. Sigh.
Back to this idea for your wedding time capsule, consider putting your veil in with yours. Veils can be rolled up really small, and they can easily be placed in a plastic bag for safe keeping. Not only will you be able to keep it safe, but you’ll for sure know where your veil is.
5. ANY LETTERS YOU WROTE EACH OTHER
Are you or your fiancé the kind to write letters to each other on your wedding day? If so, you should absolutely take the time to do it. And, of course, put the letters in your wedding time capsule.
Saving letters in a time capsule is the perfect thing to do. Not only will it keep them safe, but it will mean that one day, in the future, you will surely revisit what you wrote. The letters won’t end up in some box with a million other cards and items. They will be put in a place of honor, which is the goal.
6. A PRINT OUT OF YOUR VOWS
No matter what kind of wedding ceremony you’re having, chances are that you’re saying some wedding vows. Get a copy of them and save them in your time capsule.
Now, one of my goals is to have our wedding vows on display in our home so we can revisit them all the time. However, almost seven years into marriage and I still haven’t made it happen. That said, keeping your vows in a safe and honored place is the next best thing.

7. WINE YOU WANT TO SAVE FOR AN IMPORTANT ANNIVERSARY
Some of us really love wine, and it plays a big part at our weddings.
Maybe you’re getting married at a winery. Or you have a bottle that is given to you around your wedding, but needs to age for a while before it’s consumed. Put that special wine, or a bottle that means something to you, in your time capsule. It will motivate you to open up the capsule one day and enjoy the memory that comes with it.
8. YOUR INVITATIONS, RSVP CARDS, SAVE THE DATES, AND A BLANK THANK YOU CARD
This tip is about your stationary suite, if you will.
After my wedding, I had leftover invitations, RSVP cards, save the dates, and thank you cards floating around. It’s rather easy to collect a couple of each and put them with your wedding time capsule, don’t you agree?
9. ANYTHING THAT GUESTS SIGNED OR LEFT MESSAGES ON
If you’re planning on having a wedding guest book, or something for guests to leave their mark on, consider keeping it in your wedding time capsule.
I’ve written posts about alternative wedding guest books before, and at almost every wedding I’ve been to there has been something for guests to sign or help create. If you’re not planning on using or displaying what was created, put it in your time capsule.
10. GOALS YOU AND YOUR FIANCE MADE BEFORE YOU GET MARRIED
Are you and your partner “goals” people? The kind to make goals, write them down, and then work on them? If so, this idea for your wedding time capsule is ideal.
To do this, all you and your partner need to do is to sit down and make some goals. They can be big, lifetime goals. Or, they can be small goals. Write them down, write down the date you want to accomplish them, and put in some high level actions you can start to take right now to achieve the goals. Set a goal (see what I did there) to revisit your time capsule at a certain point and see how your goals have changed, or been achieved.
11. MEMENTOS FROM YOUR WEDDING
Back to the ideas that come from your actual wedding. Tangible mementos from the day itself.
Now, this can be anything. Maybe some napkins. Or ribbons. Or the tie someone wore. Just special items from your wedding. Maybe there’s a little guide to accompany them, saying what they were and where they were at your wedding. Or, maybe not. Just saving them is good enough.
12. A SNAPSHOT OF “NOW”
This is a super easy item for your wedding time capsule, but it’s a bit time sensitive.
Simply write down a snapshot of “now”. What’s current? What’s popular? Is there anything big going on that should be noted? Some simple ideas include the top TV shows and songs on your wedding day. World events. Who the leader of your country is. What you and your partner are interested in. And, perhaps, some predictions for the future, just for fun.

Friends, I promise if you take the time to put together a wedding time capsule you won’t regret it. All you need to do is gather items from your wedding, spend a little time with your partner, and perhaps note what’s going on when you get married.
