Need tips to have a chill wedding day? This is the right post for you!
No one wants to be stressed out on their wedding day. We all want to be calm, cool, collected. Not only will it make for a better experience for the ones getting married, but guests will follow suit. If the newlyweds are at peace with the day, everyone else will be, too.
The tricky part is making sure ahead of time that your wedding is set up to be super relaxed. A chill wedding day doesn’t just happen. There are just too many factors to consider. With guests, set up, items, logistics, food, and everything else, chill doesn’t just occur. Planning ahead, and making sure the right risks are mitigated, are crucial.
17 Tips To Have A Chill Wedding Day
This post is going to give you seventeen tips to have a chill wedding day. Not all of these tips are for everyone. Some tips are going to work for your wedding, and others will not. Pick and choose the tips that work for you. The key is that you plan ahead, work with your vendors, set expectations, and then have the right mindset on your actual wedding day.
Let’s get into it!
1. MAP OUT YOUR SCHEDULE, AND GIVE IT LOTS OF FLOAT
One of the most stressful parts of a wedding day is the schedule.
Schedules that are overpacked can lead to slippage of time, and everything that follows gets impacted. Too under-scheduled, and you may not have time allotted for key actions. There is a beautiful balance that can be achieved, though. Creating a thorough schedule, that has some time in between one step and the next, can give you float. This reduces stress, and leads to a chill wedding day.
2. DON’T OVEREXTEND YOUR BUDGET, LEAVE ROOM FOR LAST MINUTE PURCHASES
The other biggie stressor with wedding planning is the budget.
If your budget is so tight that you have literally no money leftover on your wedding day, this could be an issue. Just like with your schedule, give yourself some float. Have some money leftover on your wedding day for last minute purchases. You never know what may come up. Not worrying about the money will be huge with your mindset when issues arise (and they always do).
3. LIMIT THE NUMBER OF GUESTS YOU INVITE
You know what stresses me out? Lots and lots of people who need to be coordinated with.
If you want a chill wedding day, keep things simple. Don’t over invite. Just invite those who are the most important to you, and stick with that plan. If your wedding is going to be huge, never fear. There is a secondary option to help you stay relaxed. Keep the number of people who get to hang out with you as you get ready minimal. Just wedding party and close family, only. The more people you have coming in and out, the more dynamics you’ll have to deal with.
4. GET MARRIED IN A SERENE SETTING
Serene settings are instantly calming. Having your wedding at one will immediately give you, and those around you, a sense of peace.
Keep this in mind as you look for a venue, if you want a chill wedding day. Serene settings are subjective. If the space gives you peace, it counts. It could be a garden, a venue with a view, or a modern art gallery. As long as it works for you, it works.
5. PRACTICE YOUR HAIR, MAKEUP, AND BUSTLE BEFORE YOUR WEDDING
When it comes to your looks and outfit, you’ll want it dialed in well before the wedding.
This includes how your hair will look, what your makeup will be, and definitely making sure your bustle is easy enough to do up. These things can take a long time to figure out, and planning ahead will pay off big time on your wedding day. No one wants to spend extra time trying things out, figuring out how things work, or – God forbid – stressing on their wedding day. Do some trials, some practice, and thank me later.
6. DON’T ASK ANYONE DRAMATIC TO BE IN YOUR WEDDING PARTY
Remember when I said earlier that a chill newlywed will make everyone else chill? Well, it goes both ways.
And look, you can’t control everyone else’s chill. You know what I mean? But you can control who you have super close to you on your wedding day, proximity wise. A dramatic wedding party member can bring the whole vibe down, and stress everyone out. They can make things about them, and it’s just not conducive to a chill wedding day. So be selective, if you can.
7. PREP ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING AHEAD OF YOUR WEDDING, AND CREATE LISTS THAT ARE EASY TO FOLLOW
We need to talk about prepping ahead of the wedding. As much as you can, as soon as you can, as organized as you can.
This means packing the right things into containers and boxes, and labeling them. Labeling them so anyone else can see exactly what’s inside, where it will go, and what it will be used for. This means being detailed and intentional with what you pack, so you can give it to someone else to deal with on your wedding day, worry-free.
8. TAKE SOME TIME TO YOURSELF IN THE MORNING
I’ve given this tip a lot in the past, and I’ll give it again. If you want a chill wedding day, you need to find some solace in the morning.
This can be as simple as five minutes to yourself on a balcony. Or as involved as taking a long walk. Do what you can, with the time you have, and the situation you are in. A short meditation can go a long way with your mindset. Moving your body can also help. Being quiet, introspective, and all about your thoughts (and clearing them out), is pivotal.
9. SET THE INTENTION THAT YOU WILL REMAIN RELAXED ALL DAY
Okay, as I just mentioned, some time to yourself is crucial for a chill wedding day. During that time, try to set an intention to be relaxed all day.
Of course, this is easy for some, harder for others. You may need some sort of reminder, mantra, or even special breathing technique to help you. Do what works, and remember to remind yourself to relax. It will help you all day long.
10. HAVE SOMEONE BRING AN EMERGENCY KIT
At every single wedding I’ve been a part of, emergencies come up. Not always big emergencies, but emergencies none the less.
Having an emergency kit with supplies can help. These kits are not hard to put together, and they are usually pretty light to carry around. So, delegate the task to someone, or take it on yourself ahead of the wedding if you need to. Need help? Check out this post for emergency kit ideas.
11. TRUST YOUR VENDORS (AND HIRE CHILL VENDORS)
One thing about having a wedding, and actually enjoying it, is that you need to let things go. This means trusting the vendors you hired to work at your wedding.
Here’s the thing. If you don’t trust your vendors to do their jobs without your oversight (and subsequent stress), it will distract you from actually letting go and being relaxed on your wedding day. Maybe you think you can do it better. Maybe you’re afraid a miscommunication will come back to bite the plan. However, you need to let go and trust. For your own sanity.
12. HAVE A DRAMA BUFFER THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Sometimes we all need a little help from our friends.
One way to have a chill wedding day is to delegate all the drama to someone else. A drama buffer, if you will. This is a person who you ask to take on the task of buffering any drama around you. Perhaps they shield you from issues you don’t need to know about. Or they remove anyone bringing drama from your vicinity. This person can come in handy, or even just give you peace of mind.
13. DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE SMALL THINGS
It may be easier said than done, but one tip to have a chill wedding day is to not worry about the small things.
At the end of the day, all you need to get married is a partner and a way to make it legal. Other than that, everything is the cherry on top. As long as a crisis is not involving either of the requirements you need to actually get married, consider it a “small thing”. And don’t worry about it. At least, try not to.
14. IGNORE YOUR PHONE AND ANY UNNECESSARY DISTRACTIONS
Our phones are both a source of anxiety and the cure for it. On your wedding day, mitigate the issue and ignore your device.
Now, for many people, this may be tough. If you think you may struggle, perhaps give your phone to a friend so there’s an extra barrier to you checking it all day. Remember, the more you check your phone the less you’ll be present on your wedding day. Presence means peace, so the goal should be in tune with what’s in front of you, not your device. Less is more here, because you never know what your phone will alert you to that you just don’t need to deal with on your wedding day.
15. GO FOR THE FIRST LOOK
I’ve been singing the praises of first looks ever since I got married. True story.
I was so nervous on my wedding day, until my first look. Once I was able to meet with my partner, talk to him, and get some of the jitters out, I was calm as a cucumber. The rest of the day was spent enjoying the moment, letting the nerves go, and feeling calm. First looks, if you’re on the fence, are the way to go if you want a chill wedding day.
16. BREATH WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE
Remember earlier when I said to take some time for yourself the morning of your wedding? How about you find moments throughout the day to just breath?
Honestly, it doesn’t take much. An extra minute in the bathroom. A pause during dinner. Maybe there’s a moment actually built into your ceremony. It’s all it takes. Take a deep breath, hold it, and let it out. It will be a good opportunity for your nervous system to reset and for you to relax.
17. SPEND A COUPLE MINUTES ALONE WITH YOUR PARTNER AFTER THE CEREMONY
Last tip! For a chill wedding day, take some time alone with your partner after your ceremony.
Of course, this can be tricky. But, it’s worth it. A couple minutes just to look at each other, regroup, laugh, kiss, and set your own mindset for the rest of the night is all you need to recharge for a relaxed wedding. It’s a great opportunity to put things in perspective. And, you may not get another chance to be alone until after the wedding. So take it.
