What is a Save The Date, you might ask?
Well, a Save The Date is a little pre-invitations are an introduction for your guests to your wedding. They are a preview, if you will. I don’t think Save The Dates are absolutely necessary, but they are very valuable if you want to send them.
Why Send Save the Dates At All?
The thing about invitations is that they don’t go out until a few months before the wedding, at the earliest. This means that your out of towners may not know to make travel arrangements. With a Save the Date, you can ensure that everyone will have plenty of time to plan ahead and make it to your big day.
Who Gets A Save the Date?
I think it could go without saying that you only send Save the Dates to people who you will also invite to your wedding, but I’m making note of it to be sure everyone knows this. Before you send them, make sure to only send them to people who will for sure be invited to your wedding. And no, you do not have to send them to everyone who you will invite to your wedding. For example, to save some costs, you could limit sending them to anyone who would have to travel, to everyone in the bridal party, or anyone involved in the planning of the wedding.
How Are Save the Dates Sent?
You have two basic choices here. Paper or email announcement. Both have their pro’s and con’s. Paper is much more formal. You can send a postcard version, or an addressed envelope. This option costs more as you’ll have to print everything and pay for postage. Email announcements can often be found for free. However, this is much more informal and may not be as customizable if there is a certain aesthetic you’re going for.
What Information Is Included On A Save the Date?
Definitely include with your names, date of your wedding, the city you’re getting married in, and if you have a website, include the web address. And that’s basically it! If you want, you could add a wedding theme preview such as a saying, picture, or design, but that’s totally up to you.
When Do You Send Save the Dates?
This can be a little flexible. If you have a mostly local crowd, I recommend sending them about five to six months ahead of the wedding. However, if you have guests who will have to make extensive travel plans, such as fly in from other countries and book time off work, it’s best to send the Save The Dates six to nine months in advance. This will help those guests have enough time and details to plan ahead and make it to your wedding.
