If you’ve never been, a bachelorette party in Waikiki makes a lot of sense. It’s got a little bit of everything. Located in Honolulu, on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu, Waikiki is on the southern shore of the island. The area is bustling with activity. There is the large and beautiful Waikiki beach, high end shopping, and a ton of fantastic and fresh eateries.

Though there is plenty to do and see in Waikiki, there is also a lot going on outside of it in other parts of O’ahu. So, if you are planning on having your bachelorette party in Waikiki, but are unsure about staying in such a busy place for the whole time, know that it’s okay to venture out. Within a short drive from Honolulu there are lots of destinations that can be visited. More on those later.

Hosting A Bachelorette Party In Waikiki, Hawaii?

I think the best thing about having a bachelorette party in Waikiki is that you can keep it low key or a bit wild. You can even mix both, depending on the day. This post is going to share with you some popular things to do while in O’ahu, and also more chill suggestions. Pick and choose what works for you and your group, and you’ll have a lot of fun.

WAIKIKI LOGISTICS

First, let’s talk a little bit about Waikiki beach.

Now, know that if you’re able to coordinate a group of friends (or just one good friend) to celebrate your bachelorette party with you there, you’re one lucky lady. Unless you’re from Hawaii, getting to Hawaii (any island) can be a big trip. This is especially true if you don’t live on the west cost of the US or Canada, and have to deal with a lengthy plane trip just to arrive there. It can be an undertaking.

However, once you’re in Hawaii, things are great. The people are friendly, the islands are set up for hospitality, and if you’re into a bit of city life, Waikiki is an excellent choice. Waikiki beach has an unique ability to blend the relaxation of a beach with the hustle of a city, so there’s a bit for everyone there. And, if you get to go with friends, you’re likely to have a fantastic time.

PACKING FOR WAIKIKI

If you’ve never been to Hawaii before, it can be a bit daunting to decide what to pack. I’m going to give you some suggestions that will help you and your group be prepared. Remember, the weather is very mild around Waikiki, so some light layers are fine, or just bringing clothes that will help keep you cool.

• Bathing suits: There are lots of beaches, pools, and opportunities to swim in O’ahu. Bring more than one suit just in case.
• Bathing suit cover up’s: Cute cover up’s are a must at the beach or pool. A couple suggestions include this one and this one.
• Hat: The sun is bright in Hawaii, and it’s easy to get irritated eyes or sunburns. Be sure to bring a hat for extra protection.
• Sunscreen: Always carry sunscreen with you, and reapply often.
• Flip flops and supportive shoes: Be prepared with beach-friendly shoes, as well as shoes that will be supportive if you go for a walk or hike.
• Dresses: If you go to a luau, a nice dinner, or just want to stroll around Waikiki and want to be cute, a dress will be perfect.
• Shorts: It can get hot in the sun in Waikiki, so shorts are great.
• Light jacket: Sometimes it can be a little breezy in O’ahu, so a light jacket that can be paired with a dress or shorts could work out well.

GETTING TO WAIKIKI

There’s really only one easy way to get to Hawaii, and that’s to fly. Now, I’m sure there are ships that go there from mainland North America. However, chances are taking a cruise to Hawaii isn’t in your budget, or schedule. So, flying is the way to go. And, if you’re going to Waikiki, you’ll want to fly right into the Honolulu airport.

I suggest taking direct flights if you can. Or, bringing your luggage with you on the plane as carry on. Having your luggage lost or damaged in flight is never a great start to a vacation. Plus, carry-on luggage means that you don’t have to waste time waiting for your bags to get off the plane when you land. 

Once you arrive at the Honolulu airport, it’s easy and cost effective to use an uber or taxi to get to your accommodations. If you use a taxi service, make sure you go through the airport’s ground transportation to get in a reputable, vetted, safe, and fair taxi.

GETTING AROUND WAIKIKI AND SURROUNDING AREAS

Once you’re settled, you’re likely to want to explore.

I found that walking was really easy to do in the Waikiki area. The strip is busy, there are lots of people, and the beach is easy to find. If you want to venture out of the area, it gets a bit more tricky. Depending on where you want to go, and what your budget is, you may want to use uber to get to each destination. Otherwise, renting a car is a great way to go

A few notes about renting a car. First, factor in the cost of parking when you book your hotel. Some hotels will charge $50 a day, or more, just to park. Plus, there’s the cost of gas, and the car itself. When we went to Honolulu we rented through this car service. It came with a gas card, a parking spot, and it was a very fair price. I highly recommend.

When it comes to driving around O’ahu, it can be a bit different than mainland USA or Canada. First, the speed limit is very limited. Even on the highway the maximum speed is usually about 45 miles an hour. This means that getting around can take a while. And, depending on the time of year, there is traffic and construction. So, if you drive, plan on giving yourself a buffer to reach each destination.

WHERE TO STAY

If you go to Waikiki, staying where the action is, on or near Kalakaua Avenue. You’ll find a lot to do right in that area, and it’s safe. Yes, some of the hotels may be a bit noisier than others, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet, you may not want to go to Waikiki. Kauai may be more up your alley.

When I recently went to Waikiki, I stayed at the Beachcomber Waikiki by Outrigger. It was a nice hotel with clean rooms and friendly staff. There is a brewery and coffee shop right on site. There is also a pool, which I truly enjoyed. 

THINGS TO DO AT YOUR BACHELORETTE PARTY IN WAIKIKI

Alright, let’s get into the fun stuff now that the logistics are sorted out.

If you are having your bachelorette party in Waikiki, there are a million things you can do. It all depends on the type of party you’d like to have. Chances are, you’re into toggling between a few different types of activities, so I’ll list off some to check out, based on your interests.

BEACHES

The main attraction for going to Honolulu may be the beaches. And, as a person who is not the biggest beach person, I have to say that the beaches there are pretty nice. The sand is soft and clean. The water is refreshing, but not too cold. Plus, the scenery is amazing. If you go to the beach in Honolulu you’re likely to be able to see islands, mountains, and even boats in the water. It’s wonderful.

Here are a few of the beaches I was able to visit while on the Island of O’ahu:

• Waikiki Beach: Clearly, by the name, you can tell that if you are staying near Waikiki beach, you’ll have access to this beach. It’s beautiful, known for it’s sunsets, and a must-visit. Beware, it’s also very crowded, so try and get there early to scope out a good spot. 
• Lanikai Beach: This beach is located on the north shore of O’ahu, and is so gorgeous. In fact, it’s known for it’s sunrises. The water is clear, the sand is soft, and it’s not too crowded. It’s about a 45 minute drive from Waikiki, but worth it.
• Kialua Beach: This beach isn’t far from Lanikai beach, and it allows for more water sports. Near the beach there are rentals for kayaks, paddle boards, and other items for water fun. The beach itself can get a bit windy in the evening, so try and get there early to enjoy the warmer weather.

HIKES

Hiking may not be what you think of when you plan a bachelorette, but you never know. I’m into hiking, and it’s a fun way to get some activity in while scoping out views.

• Pillbox Hike: This hike isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s fun and worth it. Near Lanikai beach, you can do this hike and see a full panoramic view of the bay there. Be sure to wear longer pants and sunscreen on it.
• Diamond Head Hike: This hike is very close to Waikiki beach and is quite popular. It’s an easier hike to do, as it’s paved. Some parts of it are narrow, and it can get crowded, so it’s recommended you get there early. The view is spectacular, though, if you get a chance to do it.
• Moana Falls Hike: This hike, about 30 minutes from Waikiki, may get you a little muddy, so bring the right shoes and clothing with you. It’s not that difficult, but rain may get in your way. During the right time of year, there are some great waterfalls to see, and other times it’s more dry.

ATTRACTIONS

There are a ton of things to do in O’ahu, so I’m just going to list off some that I think would be fun for a bachelorette party, a girl’s weekend, a honeymoon, or just a trip in general.

• Pearl Harbor: This historical site is about 25 minutes away from Waikiki. It’s a humbling experience, and well worth the trip. If you plan ahead, you can actually go on the USS Arizona ship. Otherwise, you can roam the grounds, check out the museum, and learn a little about history.
• Kualoa Ranch: I think this is a must-see. Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki. The ranch is sprawling, and is the site that many movies and TV shows have been shot. On the ranch you can schedule UTV rides, horseback riding, zip lining, and other fun excursions.
• Paradise Cover Luau: There are lots of luau’s in Hawaii, and this one is top notch. It’s about an hour from Waikiki. Once there, you can partake in various activities (kayaking, ax throwing, hula dancing), and then it’s time to feast. The food is abundant, so come hungry. After dinner, you’re treated to an amazing show of hula dancers, singing, and fire throwers.
• Parasailing (Xtreme Parasail): If you’re into water sports, this could be really fun. I suggest this company because it’s popular and has great reviews. 
• Sunset cruise (Maita’i Catamaran): Sunset cruises can be a really special shared experience. The sunsets in Waikiki are incredible, and the peacefulness of the water only enhances that.

PERFECT FOR A BACHELORETTE IN WAIKIKI

Though the ideas above could fit a lot of different travel events, the ones below are specifically for a bachelorette in Waikiki:

• Party Buses – Oahu Party Bus or Island Party Bus have great reviews online.
• Night clubs – There are many night clubs right in Honolulu, and you can learn more about them at this site.
• Shopping – Look into the Aloha Swap Meet and the Ala Moana Center. 
• Spa days – You may want to look into your hotel, or off strip to see what is appealing and affordable.

WHERE TO EAT

The food in Waikiki is fresh, delicious, and not too overly priced. Here are some restaurants that I tried while there that truly enjoyed:

• Basalt: This is upscale, but I had the best quinoa crusted shrimp ever, and the avocado toast is remarkable.
• Fish Market: There can be a wait to get in, but the food here is rated some of the best in Waikiki.
• Aroma Café: This cute café has a full coffee bar, great acai bowls, breakfast sandwiches, and fresh fruit. Plus, you can order drinks in the afternoon.
• Maui Brewing Company: They have a huge menu and great beer on tap.
• Dukes: Their breakfast buffet is fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced.
• Barefoot Beach Café: The view from this café is incredible, as it’s on a quiet end of Waikiki. The food is delicious.
• Sunset drinks at Moana Surfrider: Have a drink and watch the sunset from this location. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
