Can we talk about things you shouldn’t do right before your wedding?
Here’s the thing. Weddings tend to be a once in a lifetime experience. And, when we start getting closer to the wedding date, we may be inspired to try new things. Or, we may lose our judgement a little and decide to things hastily or a whim. It happens. However, it’s not always for the best. There are just some things you shouldn’t do right before your wedding.
While your wedding is one of the most significant moments of your life, it’s important to remember that your own careful planning and common sense should be your guide in the days leading up to it. It’s not the time to try new things, or change your mind about key details. More on all that later. Leading up to your wedding always trust your own gut.
Things You Shouldn’t Do Right Before Your Wedding
This post will share things you shouldn’t do right before your wedding. I will strongly encourage those of you about to get married to avoid each of the things in this post. It’s not a pick and choose situation. As mentioned earlier, common sense and critical thinking will help you right before your wedding. Don’t do anything that doesn’t feel right, or seems to have some risk to it. And, don’t do the things laid out in this post.
Let’s get into it!
DON’T TRY A NEW SKINCARE ROUTINE
Look, I love skincare. I really do. I got into skincare about five years ago and I haven’t looked back. My routine is part of my life now, and is non-negotiable.
However, anyone who is into skincare knows that skin can be finicky. Change one thing and you may face breakouts, allergic reactions, or irritated skin. Sometimes your skin needs time to adjust to a new ingredient, and sometimes it really can’t tolerate it, ever. In the weeks leading up to your wedding, do not test out new things on your skin. Even if something seems really cool, just stick with what you know your skin likes.
DON’T MAKE DRAMATIC CHANGES TO YOUR HAIR
Changing your hair is one of those things you shouldn’t do right before your wedding.
This includes cutting it short, dyeing it a completely different color, or trying a bold new style. Unless these sorts of things are already “your thing”, just avoid them. A sudden change could leave you feeling regretful and mismatched with your wedding look. Be sure to have a trial run a few months before your wedding, with your stylist, to make sure you’ll love your final look.
DON’T SKIP MEALS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING
With all the busyness before your wedding, it can be tempting to skip meals to save time.
That said, not eating enough can lead to low energy, hormone imbalances, lack of sleep, and increased stress. Plus, crash dieting for the sake of losing weight can make you feel tired and irritable. Sticking to a balanced diet and eating satisfying and nourishing snacks is the way to go before your wedding. Be sure to drink enough water and prioritize food that will promote your overall wellness.
DON’T OVERDO THE ALCOHOL
I know how hard it is to avoid drinking alcohol before your wedding. I mean, it’s a party, right? That said, drinking too much is one of the main things you shouldn’t do right before your wedding.
This goes for the days leading up to your wedding, the night before your wedding, and of course, on the day. Excessive alcohol can lead to dehydration, puffiness, a lack of focus, and absolutely take away from your wedding day experience. You may not remember it as brightly, and you might also feel sick from too much consumption. Remember, it’s okay to drink just a little, if you can tolerate it, or not at all. You can have fun without the booze. Promise.
DON’T LEAVE PACKING FOR THE LAST MINUTE
Are you a last-minute packer? The kind who likes to throw everything together right before it’s time to go? If so, let’s combat that habit when it comes to your wedding.
Whether it’s heading to your honeymoon or grabbing essentials for your actual wedding day, last minute packing can lead to unnecessary stress. It opens up the risk of forgetting key items and adding frustration to your experience. Be sure to create a packing list at least a week before your wedding to ensure you have everything you need. This includes travel documents, comfort items, and anything for your wedding day.
DON’T NEGLECT YOUR SLEEP BEFORE YOUR WEDDING
Things you shouldn’t do right before your wedding? Skimp on sleep.
Sleep is essential for your mental and physical well-being. This is especially true before an important event like your wedding day. Late night planning or packing can lead to exhaustion, dark circles, and irritability. Be sure to establish a calming bedtime routine leading up to your wedding. Limit your screentime and alcohol, practice relaxation techniques, and aim to get enough rest so your daytime hours are that much more enjoyable.

DON’T FORGET TO DELEGATE TASKS
Delegation is your friend when it comes to combating burnout before your wedding. You’re already managing a lot, and much of it can’t be done without you. Because of this, you shouldn’t hesitate to delegate what you can to trusted family members, friends, or your wedding planner.
Make a detailed list of last-minute responsibilities and assign them ahead of your wedding day. This will free up your time and mind and allow you to focus and enjoy yourself. Trust others to know what to do, and let it all go.

DON’T SCHEDULE MAJOR EVENTS OR APPOINTMENTS
The days leading up to my wedding were so crazy.
I had family coming into town, and staying at my house, so I had to clean and make sure we had enough supplies and food for them. I also bought all the flowers for my wedding at a flower market in a nearby city, and that was a whole day of driving, shopping, and transporting what I needed. On top of that, I had various appointments and commitments. It was a lot.
If you can, avoid scheduling any extra significant events right before your big day. Don’t move into a new home. Don’t go on job interviews or have any medical procedures. Anything that can wait, can wait.
DON’T FORGET TO BREAK IN YOUR SHOES BEFORE YOUR WEDDING
I’ve written whole posts about feet and shoes. When it comes to the comfort of your feet on, and after, your wedding day, these things are important.
New shoes can look stunning but not feel great if you haven’t introduced them to your feet yet. Uncomfortable shoes can lead to blisters and make it hard for you to enjoy dancing or even walking down the aisle. Make sure you wear your new shoes around your home for periods of time before your wedding to break them in. Add in cushioned insoles and invisible band aids for support, if you need it.
DON’T OBSESS OVER MINOR DETAILS
Obsessing over minor details is one of the things you shouldn’t do right before your wedding.
It’s easy to fixate on tiny imperfections, risks that are becoming issues, and anything that we can, or cannot control. Remember that no event is without flaw. Overthinking minor details can rob you of the joy and excitement that your wedding can bring. It will take away from your experience, and it’s not ideal. Instead, meditate on the fact that you have trusted vendors and a support team to handle the logistics. Focus on the bigger picture, that you are marrying the love of your life surrounded by friends and family.
