Need questions for your wedding officiant? Not sure why you need questions for your wedding officiant? If you answered yes to either of those questions, you’re in the right place.
For just about every wedding, there is a wedding officiant. These are the people who “marry” you and your fiancé. The ones who pronounce you married at the end of the ceremony. Officiants can come in many different forms, as outlined in this post. Sometimes they are professionals, and sometimes they are a friend helping you out. In either case, you should prepare questions for your wedding officiant.
The thing about questions is that they can give you answers, and help you see another person’s point of view. When it comes to wedding officiants, this means that you should have questions that help you get to know them and their process. There should also be questions about how they will work in your wedding, what the ceremony will look like, and what actions need to be taken after the ceremony. There are many different elements to explore, and this post will help you get a better picture than you had before.
Essential Questions For Your Wedding Officiant
This post is going to give you essential questions for your wedding officiant. The questions in this post are not all-inclusive. They are all important, though. And, I would like to thank @officiantjimmie for his input on this post. If you’re not following this awesome officiant on Instagram, you should. Jimmie’s input on this post was very useful, and I love seeing how he works with his clients.
Now, let’s get into it!
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE OFFICIANT
The first set of questions for your wedding officiant have to do with the person themselves. And, their experience and their business.
Of course, many of these questions apply to professional officiants. If you have asked a friend to officiate your wedding, some of the questions below just won’t make sense. However, feel free to modify as you see fit for your situation. At the very least, get to know the person who will marry you. See what they love about weddings. Ask how they work, and find out about their experience. Check out their websites or social media, if they have them.
- How did you become an officiant?
- How would you describe your style?
- How many weddings / elopements have you done?
- What is the “feeling” you want your couples to have when they work with you?
- Do you have a website?
- What is your favorite part of officiating ceremonies?
- How many of your couples do you stay in touch with?
- Do you have any videos of you officiating?
- What do you love about weddings?
- Do you have any crazy stories to share with us?
- Do you have another job?
LOGISTICAL QUESTIONS FOR YOUR WEDDING OFFICIANT
This set of questions for your wedding officiant are all about working on your particular wedding.
They are about logistics. Making sure the officiant is available for your wedding. Knows your venue. That sort of thing. These questions weed out any deal breakers. They also level set how you and your officiant will communicate, and help mitigate any risks that come with wedding vendors. Essentially, these questions ensure you know what to expect while working with this wedding officiant.
- Are you available on our wedding day?
- Are you familiar with our venue?
- How much do you cost?
- When is payment due?
- Do you attend rehearsals?
- What do you wear to ceremonies?
- What happens if you can’t attend last minute?
- What time will you get to our wedding?
- How far will you travel for a wedding?
- What’s the best way to reach you?
- Do you have a contract?
QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT IS NEEDED TO PREPARE FOR WEDDINGS IN GENERAL
These questions are geared towards understanding what your wedding officiant needs from their clients in order to properly officiate their weddings. They are generalized, and will help you understand the level of service your officiant will provide.
These generalized questions will also help you and your partner understand what you need to do for this officiant to work with you. For example, some officiants require premarital counseling. Or, they may want to meet a few times before your wedding. Knowing where the officiant’s requirements and boundaries are will be very insightful as you plan your wedding.
- How many times will we meet before the ceremony?
- Do you require any sort of premarital counseling?
- What is your process like?
- What is your ideal ceremony run time? How long should our ceremony be?
- Do you need us to provide your microphone?
- Can we see your script before we get married?
- How do you handle noisy guests or guests taking photos when we asked them not to?
- Are you seeing any cool new wedding trends we should consider?
QUESTIONS FOR THE WEDDING CEREMONY
This set of questions is all about your wedding ceremony, specifically. The point of them is to understand what is expected of you ahead of your wedding, and how you can plan your wedding ceremony with the help of your officiant.
Now, of course, wedding ceremonies can go in a million different directions. You may or may want yours to be religious. And, you may or may not want to write and say your own wedding vows. If you’re not sure how you want your ceremony to go, work with your wedding officiant. They likely have some suggestions for you. Remember, they are there to help make your wedding legal, and to help your ceremony feel authentic to you and your partner. These questions will prompt you and your officiant to understand each other’s vision and requirements.
- Is your program religious in nature?
- If we are not religious, can we skip any mention of religion or God?
- If your program is not religious, can we add some mention of religion into it?
- Can we include our own personal wedding vows?
- Can you help us write our own vows?
- Are we able to add our own quotes or suggestions into your program?
- Will you step out of the way during our first kiss?
- How personal can we make our ceremony?
- Is there anything specific we should be aware of before the ceremony?
- Can we perform any rituals or unity ceremonies during the wedding ceremony?
QUESTIONS FOR AFTER THE CEREMONY
Last set of questions! The ones for what needs to be done after your wedding ceremony.
Keep in mind that you will want to know what actions you need to take after your wedding ceremony well before your wedding day. No one wants to be surprised with time sensitive tasks when they are headed off to their honeymoon in Tahiti, you know what I mean? Taking the time to find out what you need to take care of, and what your officiant will handle for you, is critical.
- Will you help us obtain our marriage license, or send it in for us after the wedding?
- Will you stay for the reception?
- Are there additional actions we need to take after the ceremony?
- If there are any issues with the filing of the paperwork, will you help us work with the court to fix them?
THOUGHTS ON QUESTIONS FOR YOUR WEDDING OFFICIANT
Friends, there are so many questions for your wedding officiant in this post, I hope you weren’t overwhelmed. I did my best to sort them into categories. Remember, not every question makes sense for every officiant. The key is to figure out what you need to know from your officiant and fill in the blanks. Being aware of what’s expected before, during, and after your wedding ceremony will reduce stress and enhance your wedding day experience. Happy wedding planning!
