Looking for free wedding gifts that newlyweds will actually want? I’m here to give you some ideas!
The thing about weddings is that they can be expensive. Not just for the couples, but for their guests as well. The travel, the time, and the gifts can really add up. And while nothing can be done about travel and time, depending on where guests are located and where the wedding is being held, gifts do have more flexibility. That’s where free wedding gifts come in, especially if you’re a guest looking to save some money.
I know what you may be thinking. Couples getting married shouldn’t be shorted when it comes to gifts. And, most couples really want cash gifts. They don’t want free items. And look, I agree with you. However, with some creativity, guests (or just people who want to give something thoughtful but aren’t actually attending the wedding) can give free wedding gifts that newlyweds actually want. It is possible, just you wait and see.
13 Free Wedding Gifts That Newlyweds Will Actually Want
This post is going to share ideas for thirteen free wedding gifts that newlyweds will actually want. The ideas in this post are not right for every single couple, but every single couple would probably appreciate at least a few ideas in this post. The key is to look at what you can give, what makes sense, and then choose what you think the couple would most appreciate. At the end of the day, it’s the thought that matters.
Oh, and as a caveat, some of these gifts may actually require some indirect costs or some of your time, which could be interpreted that they are not actually free wedding gifts. For example, costs of material, gas money, and time away from work can have a monetary value to it. I just wanted to acknowledge that, in some cases, there would be a monetary element to some of these ideas, if you go searching for one.
Let’s get into it!
1. OFFER TO BABYSIT, CAT-SIT, OR HOUSE-SIT FOR THE NEWLYWEDS
Let’s start off with some obvious free wedding gifts that align with “gig economy”. Help the couple out with a service that they would pay for.
When you are getting married, getting extra help is well, super helpful. Not only are you busy, but you may be planning a honeymoon and travel. If a wedding guest is able to, why not offer to take care of children, animals, or a couple’s house while they are away? Even if it’s just an evening so the couple can plan or go on a date without their kids, it can be helpful. And, it will be appreciated.
2. PROVIDE AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE FOR THE WEDDING
Along the lines of helping out, some guests can also help with the wedding itself.
For our wedding, we actually had friends as our florist and our officiant. These friends were not professionals, but their services saved us money and we were very thankful for them. So, if you have a skill, offer it. Beyond officiating or floral design, if you have the skills you could also offer to do gown alterations, make dessert, or complete DIY projects. As long as you’re confident you can do the job as good as or better than a professional, and not cause any extra stress on the couple, they will likely love to work with you and accept your skills as their gift.
3. DESIGN ALL THE STATIONARY FOR THE WEDDING USING A FREE ONLINE SERVICE
I recently wrote a post about free wedding resources, and you can find it here. I’ve also written about Canva, which is the go-to tool for most novice designers.
With the right website’s help, you can create amazing designs for wedding stationary. This means that save the dates, invitations, thank you cards, and even wedding signage can be designed for free. Yes, there may be some printing costs associated with the design, if they will be sent in the mail. However, having a guest take the time to design wedding stationary is a huge time saver for couples. Plus, if they aren’t excited to take on the task, and you are, this may be among the perfect free wedding gifts you can give.
4. WRITE ALL THE THANK YOU CARDS FOR THE NEWLYWEDS
Oh, okay, let’s get a little weird here.
Have you ever had to sit down and hand write a ton of thank you cards? It’s a daunting task. And, it’s not that fun. I’m just being honest. Plus, if you’re having a medium to large sized wedding, chances are that most of the cards are kind of monotonous. Yes, of course, some people are super skilled at writing thank you cards. And, some people look forward to writing them. But this isn’t the norm.
If you have decent hand writing, and are willing to take on the task, offer it up. Most guests will never know. Bonus points if you offer to address, stuff, seal, and stamp the cards (though there will be some costs for postage, just FYI).
5. DO A FULL CAR DETAILING FOR THE NEWLYWEDS
You know what happens when you get married and have a car? You drive a lot.
There are appointments. Transporting goods. Driving around out of town guests. Sometimes you’re busy and eat in your car and some trash or crumbs are left behind. Things can get ugly, real fast.
If you have a dust buster and a good rag, you can detail a car. Look at some online tutorials and follow their instructions to make sure it’s done right. A good detail can cost hundreds of dollars, so the offer to do it for a couple can save them lots and give them a good refreshed feeling when they really need it.
6. ACT AS TOUR GUIDE, PHOTOGRAPHER, OR DESIGNATED DRIVER FOR A NEWLYWED DAY OUT
Picture this.
You and your new spouse have a whole day planned. Maybe it involved a hike. Some wine tasting. Perhaps lunch. You could get massages, or stroll around a large city, or go to dinner. There are tons of things you could do.
Now imagine you had a driver for this. Or a photographer who stays out of your way. Maybe you have a knowledgeable tour guide. For the right couple, all of this could really be appealing.
So, if you’re looking for free wedding gifts for a couple and this appeals to you (to be the driver, photographer, or tour guide), offer it up. Make it special and appealing to the couple. Plan on staying out of their way, so they can focus on each other. Could be special, and could be memorable, for everyone.
7. PUT TOGETHER A TIME CAPSULE FOR THE NEWLYWEDS
Sometimes the sweetest gifts are the ones that really don’t cost anything but are sentimental.
I could write a whole post about this, but I’ll sum it up here as best I can. To put together a time capsule, you need to collect a few items. Maybe a newspaper. A flower from the ceremony. Napkins or straws. Photos, of course. Maybe you summarize pop culture (top songs, movies, TV shows) on the wedding day on a cute card. And then you package it all up and put it in a jar or box, and then give to the newlyweds. Get creative, and get sentimental.
8. REGIFT OLD GIFT CARDS THAT YOU’RE NOT GOING TO USE
This is the lazy man’s “free wedding gift”, but okay to do nonetheless.
If you have gift cards that you won’t use, consider giving them to the newlyweds as their gift. I’m talking about gift cards that would actually appeal to them, by the way. Gift cards to restaurants, shops that they like, or excursions are usually popular. Simply put them in a card and give away.
9. FIND A FAMILY HEIRLOOM AND GIVE IT TO THE NEWLYWEDS
Are you related to one of the newlyweds? Consider giving them something from their family.
This can be just about anything, but it should match their style and taste. This means that Grandma’s hutch may not be the right gift. However, Grandpa’s pocket watch from his own wedding day may. This all depends on the family, but there may be pieces of décor, art, clothing, framed photos, kitchen dishes, or jewelry that could be passed on. It should be something that the newlyweds would want, too, and something that you, yourself, own, and can give away.
10. PAINT THE NEWLYWEDS A PAINTING THAT IS WORTH HANGING IN THEIR HOME
Is this a strange suggestion? I mean, are you a painter?
Look, we are all painters in the sense that we can toss paint on to a canvas. And, there are tons of online tutorials about how to do it and make it look cool. So, get a canvas, and get some paint (and yes, I know, this may cost you some money), and go for it. You never know what you may be able to create, and it could be something awesome that the newlyweds will cherish forever.
11. OFFER UP PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FOR THE NEW COUPLE
Do you have a small, or large, business? Are you skilled in something that other people pay you money for? Consider offering up your professional services to the new couple.
Of the top of my head, I would think that accountants, contractors, interior designers, and the such would have a very marketable skillset that newlyweds would love to get some “free” labor from. You may also have a small retail business, and can gift a gift card or something like that. And look, yes, some people may see this as “cheap”, but if you have a skill that the couple would pay for anyway, take advantage of it if you’re trying to save some money.
12. COOK THE NEWLYWEDS AN AMAZING DINNER ONCE THEY GET BACK FROM THEIR HONEYMOON
Along the same lines as providing an experience, why don’t you serve as chef for the couple? If you’re a good cook, that is.
Here’s the thing. You can do this in person, at the couple’s house, or you can drop the food off. Include a nice bottle of a beverage the couple likes and dessert. Ask about dietary restrictions or allergies before you cook. And then have fun with it. Make it elaborate. Something that the couple would really enjoy, especially after their travels. Bon appetite.
13. CREATE A DAY DATE FOR THE NEWLYWEDS (PICNIC, BEACH, PARK)
Last one, and it’s kind of like a couple others on this list, but with a twist.
You can totally create a day date for the couple as your wedding gift. Choose a location, and provide the supplies to make it amazing. Let’s say it’s at a beach. If you go to the beach and set it up cute, provide snacks and activities, and then come back to take it down, it would be an awesome experience for any newlywed couple that enjoys the beach. They don’t have to do any work, and they just get to have fun and then leave. See where I’m going with this one? The same thing can be done at a park or for a picnic. Decide what’s feasible and go for it.
