The thing is, wedding days are special for grooms, too. And, though most grooms aren’t going to spend hours having their hair and makeup done like the girls may, they still need to treat their wedding days with some care. This is not only to help their own experience. It’s also to help the experience of their groomsmen, their families, and their future spouse. In short, tips are definitely needed for grooms getting ready on their wedding day.
12 Tips For Grooms Getting Ready On Their Wedding Day
This post is going to share with you my best tips for grooms getting ready on their wedding day. Yes, some of the tips have to do with logistics and paying attention to the details. Other tips are meant for the groom’s comfort, and the comfort of those around him. Everything is geared towards a relaxed, focused day where nothing goes wrong. At least, nothing that can be blamed on the groom.
Let’s get into it!
1. MAKE SURE YOUR GUYS KNOW WHEN AND WHERE TO BE
First and foremost. Let’s give some tips to the groom regarding groomsmen.
Now, every friend group is different. Some are quite responsible. Some are not. No matter what’s going on, it’s always going to come back to the groom if things go sour. Any confusion, any commotion, will be put on the groom, even if it’s totally the groomsmen’s fault. The groom choose these guys, so he’s got to take some responsibility for them.
So, long story short, it’s pivotal that the groom communicate with the groomsmen. They need to know where they need to be, and when. Maybe everyone is going to hang out before the wedding. Maybe everyone will meet at the venue. Every situation is different, and it’s the groom’s responsibility to decide and organize effectively.
2. BEFORE DOING ANYTHING, CHECK TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS EVERYTHING THEY NEED
Once everyone starts to gather on the wedding day, a big thing has to take place. And again, this falls on the groom to ensure.
The groom, and the groomsmen, and anyone else with the groom, needs to do a little inventory. Does everyone have their proper outfits? Were there any other items that anyone needed to bring? If so, are they accounted for? If not, what’s the plan?
Look, before everyone relaxes and starts hanging out and waiting for the wedding to start, you need to ensure every last sock is where it needs to be. If it’s not, you need to plan for it. This is your time to take care of emergencies, or miscommunications, if needed.
3. HAVE SNACKS OR A MEAL AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE YOU’RE WITH
Okay, once you’ve determined that everyone and everything is accounted for, grooms getting ready on their wedding day need to take care of their bodies.
Now, just like with the brides, it can be difficult for some people to eat on their wedding day. If this sounds like you, I have a whole post to give you tips on eating on your wedding day. No matter what, you’ll want food available. Sometimes wedding days mean a lot of waiting around for photography or the ceremony to start, and it’s important to have a plan for food or some snacks around to munch on.
4. DON’T EAT A MESSY MEAL WHILE WEARING YOUR WEDDING CLOTHES (SAME GOES FOR GROOMSMEN)
Okay, this is a great tip for grooms getting ready on their wedding day.
Yes, you want food available. And, you’ll want food you like available. However, don’t have messy food around. Or, if you do, make sure you, and your guys, are not eating it while wearing your wedding clothes.
Look, I’m talking saucy ribs. Plates of spaghetti. A double cheeseburger. If it can drip, it can ruin your look. Don’t risk it.
5. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE
Woah, am I reminding grooms getting ready on their wedding day to drink water?
I sure am.
I have written so many post about drinking water ahead of your wedding. Not only will it help give you energy and make your skin look better, but you’ll feel better, too. Weddings can be dehydrating events. You may get hot. You may eat salty food. The hugging and dancing and all that can make you sweat. Plus, you know, drinking alcohol is a whole thing, too.
Long story short, if you’re a groom getting ready on your wedding day, you should be drinking water. Not so much that you feel sick, but definitely enough so you’re not thirsty.
6. WATCH OUT FOR DRINKING TOO MUCH ALCOHOL (AND SAME GOES FOR THE GUYS WITH YOU)
For some friend groups, I know how this can work. And you do, too.
When we’re bored, or celebrating, it can be tempting to drink. Yes, maybe a beer or two. Or, shots. Lots of shots. And while you and your guys may be just hanging out ahead of the wedding, totally ready to go, and unsure with what to do with yourselves, please resist the urge to get totally smashed ahead of your ceremony. The same goes for your groomsmen, too. No one wants a sloppy wedding party.
Need some motivation with this one? Think of your fiancé. Think of the work that was put into the wedding planning. And then think about how all that planning will go to waste if the groom and his guys are drunk before the ceremony even starts. Not a good look. A little may be okay for you, but leave the “going hard” for after dinner.
7. WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR PARTNER
This may get a little sappy.
Look, grooms getting ready on their wedding day may not know what to do with themselves. You’re sitting. You’re ready. The groomsmen may get antsy. No one will let you run around or eat messy food. It can be a lot.
So, why don’t you channel that energy into something sweet? Write your fiancé a letter. A simple note. A post-it. It doesn’t have to be sappy, or cringy. No matter what, it will be special. And your partner will love it.
8. TAKE PHOTOS! OR BETTER YET, TAKE VIDEOS!!
I know. I know. Most of the guys I know aren’t that into taking photos and videos just because. Especially if their partners aren’t around
However, do it anyway.
It doesn’t have to be weird or obnoxious. It can be sweet. You can even ask your friends to do it when they are just sitting around and waiting for something to do. The point of it is to just document what’s going on. I mean it. My now-husband told me all about what he did before our wedding, but had literally no pictures of it. And, honestly, after the fact, I would have liked to see some. Just saying.
9. HAVE A STEAMER, IRON, TOOTHBRUSH, AND DEODERANT HANDY (AMONG OTHER ITEMS)
Having an emergency kit handy on your wedding day is a whole thing, especially for brides. It should be a thing for grooms getting ready on their wedding day, too.
You don’t have to go overboard with the supplies. You should have some basics, though. For example, a steamer for wrinkly clothes. An iron for the same reason. A toothbrush and some deodorant will likely come in handy. Additionally, you may want some headache medication, maybe a lint roller, and an extra pair of socks. You never know.
If you want more details on what could go in an emergency kit, this is the post for you.
10. ENSURE SOMEONE DOUBLECHECKS THE PLAN AND IS WATCHING THE TIME
When it comes to grooms getting ready on their wedding day, it may be easy for some grooms to lose track of the time. Or, get confused about where they need to be, and when. Don’t let this happen to you.
When you are prepping for your wedding day, and all the right people are gathered around, be sure to have someone checking the plan and the time. And I mean, checking and then checking again. You don’t want to be late, and you don’t want anyone waiting on you.
11. PRACTICE YOUR VOWS
Another item for a groom to take care of when he’s getting ready on his wedding day? Practicing his vows.
Now, I know that not everyone has personalized wedding vows. Many people have their officiant say the vows and they simply agree. Or, they go the “repeat after me” route. However, personalized wedding vows are a total vibe, and many couples opt to go for them.
If this is you and your partner, use the time before your wedding wisely. Practice your vows. You can say them alone to yourself in a bathroom if you need to. No one needs to know what you’re doing. Or, you can practice them aloud to a trusted audience. I promise the practice will make you feel more prepared and ready to cite them at your ceremony.
12. FIND SOME TIME TO RELAX AND REFLECT
Alright, home stretch. You’re dressed for your wedding. Everyone is accounted for and well fed. All the guys with you know the plan, and you feel totally prepared.
What’s the last thing that a groom getting ready on their wedding day should do? Well, relax and reflect.
Wedding days are sentimental. They are special. You are about to take a big step in your life with an amazing partner. A lot of planning and coordination has gone into this moment, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg for what is to come. Spend a couple minutes thinking about that. Set an intention for your wedding, and send some positive thoughts towards your partner. Send up a prayer if that’s your style.
The key here is to pause. Breath. And mentally prepare yourself for what’s to come.
THOUGHTS ON GROOMS GETTING READY ON THEIR WEDDING DAY
Grooms getting ready on their wedding day have more going on than meets the eye. Whether you’re the kind of groom who is super involved and prepared, or the kind who is just showing up to your own wedding, it’s still important to be intentional with the time before your wedding.
