Has anyone ever told you that you should love planning your wedding? If not, let me be the first one.
Yes, of course, in this world of toxic positivity I’d like to acknowledge that wedding planning can be stressful. Even I, as someone who loved planning my wedding, can attest, there were some meltdowns back in the day when I was planning my wedding. That said, I still think that, if planned the right way, it’s okay to love planning your wedding. It doesn’t have to be this daunting awful task in order to get married. Enjoying it is way better than not, right?
The thing about loving planning your wedding is that it requires mindset and intention. If you go into planning your wedding with the mindset that it will be awful, well, it will likely be awful. Additionally, if you are not intentional with your budget, both for money and time, again, well, you may not love planning your wedding. Getting clear with what to do, what’s possible, and why this time is special, is key.
Why You Should Love Planning Your Wedding
This post will go over why you should love planning your wedding. Hopefully it will give you some perspective on why this time is so special, and how to mitigate the biggest risks when it comes to a stressful wedding planning experience. Remember, wedding planning does not last forever, and neither does life. If you are planning a wedding and absolutely hating it, you need to decide your course of action. To be frank, this doesn’t have to suck.
Let’s get into it!
YOU SHOULD LOVE PLANNING YOUR WEDDING BECAUSE IT’S A SPECIAL CHAPTER IN YOUR LIFE
First things first. You should love planning your wedding because it’s special.
Most people only get married once. Or they only have a “real wedding” once. Remembering that this is a chapter, and that you likely won’t do it again, can help with your perspective. If things aren’t great, make them great. Keeping in mind that there are events and things that will happen in this time of your engagement that will never happen again for you may help. Perhaps that mindset helps you savor what is working, or remember that the stressful parts are only temporary.
YOU GET TO PLAN SOMETHING WITH THE PERSON YOU LOVE
Chances are, planning your wedding is the first major thing that you and your fiancé are doing together.
Yes, yes, I know. Some of you already have houses and kids with your fiancé. Maybe you’ve traveled the world or started a business. Yes, some of you have planned big things before with the loves of your life. However, some of you haven’t. And it’s likely you haven’t planned a wedding with them yet. So embrace it. See how they plan. Work together. Have fun doing certain wedding tasks with your partner (more on that in this post). Enjoy this time.
ALL YOUR LOVED ONES WILL BE TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE YOU AND YOUR PARTNER
Here’s the thing. Getting everyone you love together to celebrate love is a momentous occasion. It’s not something to take for granted.
Yes, of course, there are other celebrations in life. Birthdays, retirement parties, and baby showers, for example. There will be times that your loved ones will gather to celebrate you, other then your wedding. Still, this is an amazing chapter for you. Everyone you love, together to celebrate your love. It’s a beautiful thing.
YOU HAVE PERMISSION TO SPEND MONEY
Are you a spender? A saver? Somewhere in between?
In either case, one fun thing about getting married is you get to spend money. Granted, I hope you have some money to spend, but that is a post for another day (and if you need tips on avoiding debt to pay for your wedding, this is the post for you). As long as you have the money, spending it can be joyful. If you like to spend, it’s a win. And, if you like to save, this is your opportunity to spend money on something you’ve been saving for. Embrace it.
YOU GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW CLOSER WITH YOUR FIANCE’S FAMILY
Planning a wedding can be a bonding opportunity with your future family.
Think about it. Maybe you’re not that close with your fiancé’s siblings. Or their parents. Including them in pre-wedding events, planning the wedding, and the wedding itself opens up the opportunity to grow closer to them. You’ll have something to focus on rather than just “getting to know each other”. And, if you are already close to them, this will be a fun way to work together.

WEDDING PLANNING IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAN SOMETHING BIG
Are you a planner? Yes? Then you should love planning your wedding because it’s a unique opportunity to enhance those planning skills. No? This is a perfect chance to challenge yourself and see what you can plan, without planning, if you know what I mean.
Here’s the thing. Wedding planning is basically project planning at it’s core. If you need more details on that, here’s the post you should check out. All you need is to know your scope, schedule, and budget. Once you have those things dialed in, everything else will fall into place. Planning your own wedding gives you the chance to really think about what you and your fiancé want, what is possible, and to find ways to make it all happen. You may just find that you grow and learn as you go on your wedding planning journey. Plus, watching it all come to fruition is so satisfying.
PLANNING A WEDDING IS EXCITING
You should love planning your wedding because it’s so exciting.
I’ve heard that feelings of nervousness are almost identical to feelings of excitement. If you are feeing nervous about your wedding day, perhaps you need to change your perspective. Tell yourself that you are excited. Literally replace your vocabulary from thinking you’re nervous to thinking you’re excited. Be excited about the events leading up to your wedding. Be excited about seeing all your guests. Get excited about seeing your wedding for the first time. About saying your vows and dancing with your partner. Just get excited about the occasion and what’s to come in the next chapter.
WEDDING PLANNING GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO
One thing is for sure. Weddings are something to look forward to.
I know, I know, some people can’t wait to get it over with. The thing is, though, is that if you are planning your own wedding, you are in control. You don’t need to have an event that you’re not excited about. Weddings should be about what you and your partner want. Whatever that means to you. This includes the setting, the people, the clothes, and the vendors you want. Looking forward to your wedding is one of the best perks of wedding planning. It’s a beautiful time in your life.
THOUGHTS ON WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE PLANNING YOUR WEDDING
Friends, I strongly believe that you can and should love planning your wedding. Remember, wedding planning gives you unique opportunities to embrace one busy chapter in your life. It’s a celebration of you and your partner, which only comes around once in a while. Weddings allow loved ones to gather and be happy for each other, celebrating in ways that feel authentic to them.
