Are you wondering what the best low risk wedding planning tasks to delegate to your family and friends are?
You’re in the right spot!
Before we go into the actual tasks, let’s talk about what “low risk” means. Low risk means low priority. It means that if your friend or family member messes up the task, you won’t see your wedding day as ruined because of it. Low risk means that your friend has freedom to do the task to the best of their ability, and you’ll be okay with the outcome. It means that your family member can make a mistake with it, and you’ll move on real quick. Low risk is literally just low risk. The opposite of high stakes.
Now that we know what low risk means, I want to touch on the friends and family part. The thing is, many friends and family members want to help with your wedding. And, their help can be a good thing. Not only does it allow them to be involved, but it can save you money. The risk that comes with it is that they may not be professionals at the task they are taking on. And, you may be taking a risk allowing them to help. This is why identifying low risk wedding planning tasks to delegate to your friends and family is key, before you start making agreements.
14 Low Risk Wedding Planning Tasks To Delegate To Your Friends and Family
This post is going to lay out low risk wedding planning tasks to delegate to your friends and family. There is a caveat, though. Everyone has different priorities. If you see an item on this list, and it’s really, really important to you, don’t delegate it to just anyone. Make sure that task goes to someone who can execute it in the way you envision. For the most part, for most people, we should agree that the tasks on this list are easy to “give away”, but you do what’s best for you. It’s your wedding.
Let’s get into it!
1. LOOKING UP POSSIBLE WEDDING VENDORS
Ahh, wedding related research. One of the easiest low risk wedding planning tasks to delegate to to your friends and family.
Here’s the thing. Some of us love to research. We love search engine rabbit holes where we can create side lists, do comparisons, and delve deep, deep, into reviews. If you are among those types of people, you are my people. And, if you have one of those types of people in your life, the kind who really loves research, give this low risk wedding planning task to them.
Vendor searching is one of the first things you’ll need to do when you get serious with your wedding planning. Letting someone else do this will make them feel involved and helpful right away. And, if you choose a vendor they found, even better.
2. PROVIDING MUSIC SUGGESTIONS
One wedding planning task that I didn’t realize could be so time consuming was finding the right music for each part of my wedding.
I mean, yes, we had a band. And they knew what music they would play. But what about before the ceremony? Or during the ceremony? Plus the background music for cocktail hour, our first dance, and the last song of the evening? How about music to play while we were getting ready?
Look, it all matters. And, you may have a friend who is really skilled at playlists or knows how to set a mood with music. Give this low risk wedding planning task to them, and let them run with it.
3. JOINING WHILE YOU PICK OUT YOUR WEDDING DRESS
Joining someone while they are picking out their wedding dress is a huge honor. And, yes, it’s not exactly a wedding planning task, but it is something easy to involve someone in. Plus, every input matters when you’re making a big decision.
If you have someone close to you who wants to be involved, but you really can’t figure out how they can help your wedding, include them in your wedding dress hunt. They will feel special, and it’s super low risk because you can take their advice, or not.
4. HELPING WITH DIY PROJECTS
Are you a DIY project person? I am so not. I tried to be for our wedding, but man, I wish I had a crafty friend who could have helped out.
If you have strong opinions about the décor at your wedding, and you aren’t confident in your friend or family member’s ability to execute DIY projects, this may not be the best task to delegate. However, if you’re not that picky, have some visuals, and trust your friend, delegate away.
5. PICKING UP ITEMS YOU’VE ALREADY ORDERED
You know what’s really fun? Ordering items.
You know what’s not really fun? Going to pick them up.
Yes, of course, many items may be delivered. However, not everything can be sent right to your address. Sometimes you have to pick up food. Or clothes. Or whatever. Whenever possible, delegate the picking up to a friend or family member. It will save you time, which is valuable. And, it’s super low risk, in most cases.
6. CREATING AN EMERGENCY KIT
Emergency kits are the lifeline of risk mitigation when you’re hosting a wedding.
In case you missed it, I once wrote a whole post about emergency kits. What to put in them. Why you need them. All that jazz. And while putting together an emergency kit may not seem like the most fun thing to do in the world, it’s a lifesaver when you need it. So, ask a friend to make an emergency kit happen. You’ll be glad you did.
7. PUTTING TOGETHER WELCOME BAGS
Are you putting together welcome bags for your wedding? Not sure what I’m talking about? Read this post for more details.
The thing about welcome bags is that they have a lot of components. And, they have to be put together. I remember putting them together for my wedding. My hallway was lined with bags and items. It was a real scene.
Putting together welcome bags, bathroom baskets, or anything like that are among low risk wedding planning tasks to delegate to your friends and family. You can put the first one together, and then let them handle the rest.
8. MAKING SURE THERE IS FOOD AVAILABLE WHILE YOU’RE GETTING READY
I know. I know. Food is probably the last thing you’ll want to think about while you’re getting ready on your wedding day.
I mean, the last thing until you’re really, really hungry.
Asking a friend or family member to make sure food is available while you’re getting ready is a no brainer. You can even tell them what to pick up. It doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate. But, it should be somewhat healthy, easy to eat at room temperature, and not that messy. Just saying.
9. STEAMING DRESSES, DAY OF WEDDING
A wrinkle can really ruin a look.
When it comes to weddings, it’s easy for clothing to get wrinkled. Travel, packing, and transferring of garments is bound to cause some unsightly folds. The best bet to get rid of them? Steam them! Steaming, with the right steamer, is easy and effective. So, ask someone close to you to help with it. Preferably someone who has steamed before. When you and your girls are all done up and standing in wrinkle free dresses, your friend or family member will know that they played a huge part in it, too.
10. FIELDING PHONE CALLS AND TEXTS ON THE WEDDING DAY
This is one wedding planning task that you may or may not want to delegate. However, there are some pro’s to it if you do.
On your wedding day, you’ll want to be present. This means that you’re not consumed with your phone. Checking it. Responding to people. Dealing with any crisis. You know what I mean.
Rather than ignore your phone all day, ask someone else to deal with it. Filter in the information. Respond for you while you’re having your hair and makeup done. That sort of thing. You get to be informed, but only through your filter. Yay.
11. USHERING PEOPLE TO THEIR SEATS BEFORE THE CEREMONY
This low risk wedding planning task comes with a caveat. If you are particular about where certain people sit at your wedding, don’t delegate this task to just anyone.
For example, you may have a row of seats saved for family. If you ask someone to help show people to their seats, that person needs to understand who that row of seats is saved for. And, yes, of course, people can find their own seats. However, having a helping hand is usually appreciated, and a nice touch for your wedding.
12. MAKING SURE GUESTS SIGN YOUR GUEST BOOK
These days, guest books are getting more and more creative. The thing is, though, not everyone will sign them. Asking someone to direct people to sign your wedding guest book is among low risk wedding planning tasks to delegate.
Here’s the thing. This task isn’t for everyone. However, if you want to give someone a job, and they are reasonably friendly or persuasive, this is a good one. You’re only having one wedding with these particular guests. Getting their messages and having the ability to look at them later will be meaningful.
13. TAKING PHOTOS AND VIDEOS DURING THE RECEPTION
Yes, I know, you’re hiring a photographer to do this. And, you may also have a videographer. Why would you need extra photos? People are going to take them, right?
Well, not so fast.
It’s okay to ask someone to take some behind the scenes photos and videos for you. In fact, some of my favorite photos and videos from our wedding are from our close friends. The ones who took videos of me and my mom practicing our dance. The ones who captured us signing our wedding contract late at night. All of it. A skilled friend with a great phone can be priceless.
14. PACKING UP ITEMS AFTER THE WEDDING
You know what was difficult after our wedding? Getting everything together.
I thought we had it handled. That there was a system. But, boy, I was wrong. It was late, it was overwhelming, and it was cold and dark.
Asking someone, or group of people, to stick around after the wedding to help pack up your belongings is low risk, and it will be so appreciated. Of course, you may have friends who will do this anyway. Be thankful for those people. It never hurts to ask and be prepared, though.
