Are you ready to debunk some skincare myths with me? The kind of myths that can leave your skin worse off than if you never believed in them before? Yes? Me too!
Look, there’s a whole movement out there regarding skincare. These days people are educating themselves on the right products to use, and when to use them. We’re finding that taking care of our skin properly is in the same realm as most other wellness items, like exercising, sleeping, and hydrating. Ask anyone with a diligent skincare regimen, and they will agree. Skincare is self-care. And, when we’re planning weddings, we need all the self-care we can get.
The thing is, though, is that there are a ton of skincare myths out there. And, when you’re planning a wedding, many of these myths can work against you. Not only do you want to look and feel your best on your wedding day, but there’s more to it than that. Following skincare myths can mean spending more money than you need to, and wasting time. No one needs that in their day when they are engaged.
11 Skincare Myths You Need To Know Before Your Wedding
This post is going to go over eleven skincare myths you need to know before your wedding. Before we get into it, I’m going to remind everyone that I’m not a doctor. I’m not an aesthetician. Skincare is important to me, though. For the last few years I’ve been educating myself on what skincare really means, and I feel equipped to at least write about it and share what I’ve learned. It’s helped me, and I think it can help you, too.
Let’s get into it!
*Disclaimer – I may have links in here that provide me a small commission if used. This doesn’t impact the advice I give, though. Myths are myths.
SKINCARE MYTHS ABOUT ACNE
1. ACNE DOESN’T AFFECT ADULTS
Grown ups don’t get pimples. Right? Wrong!
Obviously, we associate blemishes with teenagers. However, the truth is that adults get acne, too. And, it doesn’t have to be embarrassing. If you suffer from acne, know you’re not alone. If your skincare routine isn’t helping you out, it’s time for professional opinions. Be sure to work with a dermatologist who isn’t just about what you put on your body, but also looks at your hormones, diet, and environment. You never know what you may find.
2. POPPING PIMPLES IS TOTALLY FINE
I’m so guilty of this one.
Popping pimples can do so much damage to your skin, it’s not even funny. Yes, of course, a whitehead that is at it’s peak is easy to remove and treat. However, a deep pimple, the kind that you really need to dig for, is not okay to pop. You may feel like you’re doing your skin right by using your fingers or tweezers to coax out a deep blemish, but you’re actually introducing more bacteria to the site. Plus, you can leave scars if you’re not careful. Long story short, leave pimples alone, or treat with an anti-acne treatment product, like this one.
3. GREASY FOOD CAUSES PIMPLES
This is a skincare myth that is actually good news! Greasy food does not cause pimples, despite the oil and grease found in it.
Pimples are caused by a multitude of reasons. Not properly cleansing or treating your skin, for example. Hormone imbalances can also cause pimples, as can reactions to certain products or allergies. If you find that pimples are a problem for you, look at what you put on your skin, your overall stress levels, and what you ingest. Always work with a dermatologist or professional if it gets very troublesome.
SKINCARE MYTHS ABOUT PRODUCTS
4. IT’S OKAY TO APPLY SKINCARE PRODUCTS IN ANY ORDER
Did you know that skin care has a specific order in which it should be applied? It totally does.
I go into it in this post about starting a skincare routine, but I’ll share again. To properly use your skincare products, you should go in the order of cleanse, prep, treat, and protect. Essentially, use a cleanser, then a toner, a serum, and then moisturize. If you exfoliate, it is generally after the prep stage. Using products out of order can confuse skin, and make the usage less effective.
5. FACIALS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR SKINCARE
Have you ever gotten a facial? Where a professional gets into your skin really good with all the products and methods and you walk out with a refreshed face? I have, and it can be magical.
Facials are not essential to skincare, though.
Look, you may live and die by your facial schedule. And that’s great for you. The downside of facials is that they can be expensive and tricky to schedule. If they don’t work for you, don’t despair. A solid at-home skincare routine where you cleanse, prep, treat, and protect, on a regular basis, is probably all you need for beautiful, cared-for skin.
6. MAKEUP MAKES YOUR SKIN AGE
Have you heard that makeup makes your skin age? If so, let me clarify what that actually means.
The truth is, makeup will not make your skin age any faster than if you don’t wear makeup. In fact, some makeup contains SPF, and can actually protect your skin when you’re in the sun. However, bad makeup practices can age your skin. Not properly taking makeup off, for example, can cause build up in fine lines and make them appear deeper than if you took your makeup off properly. Makeup wearers should always take care to cleanse their skin and protect it after makeup use to prevent this from happening.
GENERAL SKINCARE MYTHS
7. YOU SHOULD WASH YOUR FACE WITH HOT WATER
This is a skincare myth that I should really follow through on in my daily life. However, I like a hot shower, and I like to wash my face in the shower. That’s just me, though.
The truth is that hot water isn’t the best for our skin. It’s drying, and often leaves our skin tight and even flakey. When it comes to washing our faces, hot water isn’t the best. It can strip our faces of naturally made oils, leaving them more susceptible to dryness and not feeling that great. The best temperature of water to use is actually lukewarm when it comes to cleaning your face. Second best is cold water.
8. MEN DON’T NEED SKINCARE
Why is it that most of the men I know don’t have a skincare regimen? Is the same for the men you know, too?
Men have skin, right? And, that skin can get wrinkles, blemishes, and dirty like the rest of ours? Ergo, men need skincare. Now, I’m not saying that they need a ten step ritual like some diehards I know. However, most men should have a good cleaning, treating, and protecting routine. And, they should definitely be wearing sunscreen.
If you have a man in your life, see if they are open to revamping their routine a little and getting started. Their skin will thank you later.
9. WATER MEANS HYDRATED SKIN
When you drink water it may feel like your skin is just briming to the surface with hydration. However, this isn’t actually the case.
Water is good for your skin, don’t get me wrong. It helps your internal organs function better and is a necessity to life, for sure. However, when it comes to your skin, it’s not like water is coming to the surface and that’s what you see as hydration. Rather, water helps your blood flow a bit better, and this can cause visible skin benefits. We should all aim to drink at least half our body weight in ounces of water each day, to reap the benefits.
10. TOXINS COME OUT IN OUR SWEAT
Some people think that working out, or sitting in saunas, will allow toxins in their bodies to come out. Unfortunately, this is a skincare myth.
Sweat releases things such as salt, proteins, and carbohydrates, but does not release toxins. The organs in your body do release toxins, though. So, if you want your body to be functioning at it’s peak, it’s important to ingest enough quality nutrients and water for your organs to be at their most functional.
11. YOU CAN SHRINK YOUR PORES
Honey, this is a skincare myth that I wish was a fact.
Unfortunately, pores are not shrinkable. Ugh.
Look, you can minimize the visibility of pores with a great exfoliator, cleanser, serum, or skincare practices. Cleaning out the gunk in pores will make them look smaller and less noticeable. However, we aren’t actually shrinking them.
THOUGHTS ON SKINCARE MYTHS
Friends, there are so many skincare myths out there that I’m committing right here and now to debunk more in the coming months! When you’re planning a wedding, it’s important to get diligent about your skincare. Not just so your skin can look and feel it’s best, but so you can spend less time and money on things that won’t help your skin. Happy wedding planning!
