I’m sharing more social media wedding trends with you, and giving you my honest opinion on if they are worth doing!
If you want to have a trendy wedding, social media is a great place to gather inspiration and ideas. However, there is nothing wrong with tradition. And, there’s nothing wrong with a hybrid of traditional wedding elements and some trendy ones, too. It’s all about implementing what works for you, your partner, and your wedding.
A few weeks ago, I shared my thoughts on social media wedding trends in this post. The trends came from this Brides article, laying out TikTok trends and highlighting the most popular ones these days. The post I originally wrote regarding the article got to be a bit too long, so I split it into two posts. This one is the follow up, with my thoughts on more social media wedding trends.
11 MORE Social Media Wedding Trends You May Want To Try
As stated above, this post is going to go into my thoughts on more social media wedding trends. Yes, most of them are on TikTok, but you can easily find these trends on Instagram, Pinterest, and even YouTube. So, they are out there. My opinions are just that, my opinions. I’m looking at these trends from a lens of what makes sense, what’s worth the effort, and what your guests will enjoy. Pick and choose what works for you.
Let’s get into it!
1. INVITING ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO CATCH THE BOUQUET
If you’ve read the blog for a while now, you know that I’m not the biggest fan of the bouquet toss.
Maybe it’s that most of my friends got married in their thirties, and don’t have that many single friends. Maybe I just find it strange to pit women against each other, all grabbing at one flying object. I don’t know. I just don’t like it.
However, I do kind of like this social media wedding trend where anyone and everyone is invited to come catch the bouquet. And I mean, everyone. Men, women, kids, married people, and singles. For the right group, the activity can be a fun one, right? Maybe the winner gets to keep the bouquet. Or, another prize. Who knows.
Verdict: If you think your wedding guests will go for it, you should go for this trend. It’s kind of fun.
2. DANCES THAT LAST ONLY 90 SECONDS
One gripe wedding guests often have is that the first dance, and the mother/son or father/daughter dances, tend to go on a little too long.
My husband even once went to a wedding where the couple’s first dance was well over nine minutes. He still talks about it.
One social media wedding trend that keeps popping up is to keep the scheduled dances less than ninety seconds long. This is just enough time to get into the dance, keep guests engaged, and then have it end. Plus, you can get through all the scheduled dances pretty quickly at that pace. Honestly, I’m not mad at this idea. However, this is your wedding. If you want to dance with your spouse for the full song, do it.
Verdict: If you want to keep it short, keep it short. But choose what works for you and don’t worry too much about the length of the song (unless it’s very, very long).
3. COCKTAILS FOR GUESTS TO DRINK DURING THE CEREMONY
I’m all about treating your guests right, from start to finish. If this means serving them some cocktails to enjoy during your ceremony, so be it.
Now, this trend won’t work for every wedding. Some venues will not allow alcohol in their ceremony spaces. And, sometimes the logistics just don’t work out. Plus, there may be the concern that guests will start a bit too early and be totally wasted by the end of the wedding. Not a fun scene.
However, for some weddings, this is a great idea. Keep the drinks light, weather appropriate, and your guests are likely to enjoy your wedding even more. And, if you can’t serve cocktails, see about a non-alcoholic option, especially if your wedding is in a warm climate.
Verdict: If this appeals to you, and your venue will allow it, go for it.
4. STAYING SEATED FOR THE BRIDE SO THOSE IN THE FRONT CAN SEE HER, GUESTS STAND AFTER SHE PASSES
There are a lot of social media wedding trends that have to do with ceremonies, entering and leaving them. Until I read the Bride’s article, I’d never heard of this one.
Traditionally, guests will remain seated after the wedding party and groom have entered the ceremony space. They are usually asked to stand for the bride, and sit back down once she’s reached the end of the aisle. However, in this trend, wedding guests stand up after the bride has walked past them. This allows everyone to see the bride walk in, regardless of where they are seated.
Honestly, I don’t really get it. I mean, I get it, but I don’t. Guests are going to have issues seeing the bride whether they are seated or not. It may even be easier for them to see the bride if they are standing. I don’t know. It’s not for me.
Verdict: I mean, if you get it, go for it. Otherwise, stick to tradition.
5. MIXED GENDER WEDDING PARTIES
For most of history, brides would have female bridesmaids stand up for them and grooms would have male groomsmen stand up for them. However, things are different these days.
Let’s not go into the whole gender fluidity when we discuss this trend. Let’s just assume that all the people in the wedding party identify as male or female. And, they may be close to the bride, or the groom, regardless of sharing the same gender. This means that females may be part of the groom’s wedding party, and males part of the bride’s.
I don’t see any issue with this. I have guy friends, and I also have a brother. There is no reason I’d not include someone I’m close to in my wedding just because we didn’t share a gender. However, if you’d like everyone to “dress the same”, than this may not be for you, regardless of your close relationships.
Verdict: If you want someone in your wedding party, ask them to be in your wedding party. Don’t worry too much about genders and “sides”. It’s all good.
6. HAVE A SPECIAL SEAT / SIGN FOR YOUR MATCHMAKER
You know how some seats at weddings have special signs for the guest sitting in them? For example, the bride may have a “bride” sign, and the best man may have a “best man” sign.
This trend isn’t necessarily about the signs themselves, but having a special one for the friend who matched the couple up. That sign would say “matchmaker”. I mean, it’s cute. And, to be clear, if I matched up some friend and they got married, I’d appreciate a sign. Just saying.
Verdict: It’s adorable. Signs on chairs are in no way a requirement to have a wedding. It’s a thing some people want to put effort into, but it’s all about your motivation. If you have your matchmaker at your wedding, and you want to give them a sign, go for it.
7. DOING A MOTHER / DAUGHTER DANCE
Most weddings will have a special dance with the couple getting married and their parents. Most commonly, the father/daughter dance and the mother/son dance.
But, what if your dad isn’t at your wedding? Or, you’re not close? Should you mix it up? I absolutely think you should. I mean, I did. My dad passed away before my wedding, but I still wanted to honor him with a dance. And, I’m close to my mom. So we danced. It was special, meaningful, and what we both wanted to do.
Verdict: Dance with whomever you want. Your mom, your brother, your uncle, your new father-in-law. It’s okay to designate a time to dance with someone special, even though it’s not “tradition”.
8. SOCIAL MEDIA MINUTE
Wait?! Social media wedding trends about social media? How meta!
A social media minute is the new answer to guest’s cell phone bombardment during your ceremony. One extreme is to let your guests do what they want. Take photos. Videos. Get in the way of the actual photographer you hired. The other extreme is an unplugged ceremony, where you ask all guests to put away their phones and cameras for the entire ceremony. A social media moment is a happy medium.
Basically, you let guests take photos, but only for a moment. And then they need to put their phones away. Your officiant can help keep the time for them, and set the boundaries.
Verdict: I love this, and kind of wished we knew about it when we got married. What a great way to have a controlled photo-taking frenzy, but also keep your ceremony cell-phone-free when it matters.
9. NOTES ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SHOES
I feel like this trend has been around for awhile, but it was on Bride’s list of social media trends, so we’ll explore it.
For this trend, you and your partner respectfully write a love note on each other’s shoe ahead of your wedding day, or at some point during your wedding day. I think the charm here is that you read the note on your wedding day, and the note will be with you throughout the day. There are even some variations around competing to have the note that is the most legible at the end of the day, but this wasn’t mentioned in the Bride’s article.
Verdict: This is a cute idea, but I don’t love the idea of writing a love note that can be worn away. Yes, pictures can be taken, but it may be just as sweet to just write each other a card.
10. SKIPPING THE CAKE CUTTING
For most weddings that have cake, there will be some sort of big deal surrounding the cake cutting.
Not only does cutting the cake mean that the couple is surrounded by wedding guests, awkwardly cutting cake, but they are expected to feed each other as well. And, for some weddings, they may try to smush the cake in each other’s faces. This may or may not result in some drama.
Verdict: I mean, cake cutting can be awkward. It just can. I remember feeling strange about it at my own wedding. And, you can still feed each other dessert other than cake. So, if you want to skip it, skip it.
11. TAKING A UNITY SHOT
Have you ever been to a wedding that had a unity ceremony? Maybe the couple lit a candle together? Or they poured sand into a vase? This is sort of like that, but in a more “party” theme.
To take a unity shot, the couple may take a shot of alcohol together, during their ceremony. Perhaps this is after their first kiss? Or before? I don’t think the timing matters. What matters is whether a unity shot is appropriate for your wedding.
Verdict: A unity shot may be great for a wedding that is going to be a big party. One where the guests can start drinking a bit early on, or where the vibe isn’t all that serious. If it appeals to you, and your venue doesn’t mind, it could be fun.
THOUGHTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA WEDDING TRENDS
Friends, weddings can be what you make them. You can stick to tradition, go with the trends, or try something new. As long as it makes sense to you, and isn’t hurting anyone, it should be okay. So, if social media trends appeal to you, have fun with them. Make them your own. And, of course, enjoy yourself. Happy wedding planning!
