Wedding dress trends are on fire this summer!
Weddings have been strange the past few years. There’s been rescheduling, guest limitations, and a changing mentality of doing what works best for each couple. However, weddings are finally getting back on track to being a bit more predicable. What has changed, though, is the fashion. These days, brides have a ton of options with their style, and current wedding dress trends are showing that.
The cool thing is, trends are just that. Trendy. The tried and true dresses of yesterday are still around. And, there is nothing wrong with wearing something more traditional. However, this summer, some wedding dress trends that may have seemed a bit “out there” in previous years will be seen time and time again at weddings. It’s a pretty awesome thing.
Summer 2022 Wedding Dress Trends
This post is going to share the most interesting summer 2022 wedding dress trends. Some of these trends may appeal to you, should you be shopping for a wedding dress. Others may interest you as possible bridesmaids dresses, or wedding guest styles. Whatever the case is, enjoy!
Let’s get into it!
FLOWERS ON WEDDING DRESSES
Pressed flowers had their moment last year, and that trend has parlayed itself right onto wedding dresses.
There are actually a lot of options to having flowers on a wedding dress. It could be that the fabric subtly has flowers in it that blend into the dress. Or, there could be colorful flowers as part of the pattern on the dress. This wedding dress trend is mostly about getting away from basic, white dresses, and showcasing something a bit more bold. Plus, this trend is great for a bride who wants less accessories, and for her dress to be the statement piece.
BRIDAL SUITS
Okay, okay, I know this post is about wedding dress trends. However, bridal suits are a variation of wedding dresses, right? We just have to highlight them!
With the popularity of courthouse weddings and elopements, bridal suits are having a moment. On the right bride they can be tailored to perfection and look super sharp. Typically, bridal suits are white, but there are no rules that say other colors are not allowed.
In some cases, touches can be added to a suit to make it seem more “bridal”. Recent wedding runway shows had bridal suits with added bows, frilly lace, and paired with bold jewelry or a wedding veil.
SHORT WEDDING DRESSES (FOR EVENTS OTHER THAN THE CEREMONY)
Party dresses are in!
Now, short dresses can be worn at the actual wedding ceremony, especially if it’s casual, but the big trend right now is to wear a short wedding dress for another part of the wedding, or totally separate event. Many summer 2022 brides are opting to change into a short dress for their reception. They may also wear a short wedding dress to their engagement party, rehearsal, or welcome party. And, they are showing off amazing shoes while they are doing it, too.
WEDDING DRESSES WITH CUT OUTS
Cut outs are everywhere this summer.
You know what I mean by cut outs, right? They are when the fabric of a dress (or top), has a literal cut out in it. It may show a splash of a person’s back, or torso. Wedding dresses are no exception to this trend. We are seeing more and more cut outs within wedding dresses. Tastefully done, of course.
Along the same lines as a cut out, the “cold shoulder” look is also trending with wedding dresses. This is where a dress has shoulders exposed, with either straps or sleeves containing the rest of the bride’s arm.
COLORFUL WEDDING DRESSES
Color is popping in wedding dress trends this summer!
The main colors that are trending are shades of blue, pink, and purple. With regards to wedding dresses, they tend to be more muted, with a hint of these shades, but definitely not the white or cream dresses we are all used to. Essentially, it’s okay to get away from the all-white numbers we typically see. Bonus, if you choose a dress that is a shade of blue, it’s perfect for the “something blue” tradition.
TWO PIECE WEDDING DRESSES
If cut out’s are trendy, it’s no surprise that two pieces are as well. Even with regards to wedding dresses.
Now, wearing a two piece does not mean that brides are showing their torsos. However, many of them are going for it, with long skirts and short tops. In some cases, the two pieces can match perfectly, and be the same fabric or pattern. In others, they simply come together. For example, the top may be quite shiny or blingy, while the bottom is more plain.
SHOWING SOME LEG
Legs are having a serious come back right now.
This is one of the sexier wedding dress trends, don’t you think? Having a long wedding dress, with a slit up it, and showcasing a leg can bring some sexiness to an outfit. And, it can make for excellent photos with the bride and her partner. We’re also seeing this trend extend to bridesmaids dresses, and guest dresses. When you get married in the summer, when it’s hot, it’s really no surprise that showing some leg is popular.
ASYMMETRICAL NECKLINES
While some brides may want everything to be perfectly balanced with their wedding dress, asymmetrical necklines are among this summer’s wedding dress trends.
What does this mean, exactly? Well, it could be that one shoulder is bare, while there is a strap on the other. Or, there is a full sleeve on one side of the dress, leaving the other arm completely exposed. It could also be as simple as a slant on a dress’s neckline. The appeal of the asymmetry is to call attention to the bride’s neck, and can show off a great collarbone.
BALL GOWNS
Okay, this last wedding dress trend may come as a surprise. Ball gowns are back.
After scheduling and rescheduling their weddings, some brides are just going for it with the big dresses. To be clear, the look isn’t about a big poofy, ridiculous dress. It’s about having a flowing gown that is still movable and fun to be in. It’s about making a statement that is beautiful, not comical. Wearing a ball gown isn’t for everyone, but if you can pull it off, try on a few before your wedding. You never know what will work until you try it on.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Friends, the summer 2022 wedding dress trends are all there for you. Getting married this summer means that you can basically wear whatever appeals to you. If you want to showcase some colorful flowers, or have a shade of purple in your dress, go for it. Suit up, if you like that look. Don’t be afraid to show some skin with cut outs, two pieces, or a leg slit. And, go for it with a large ball gown if you’re feeling it. Happy wedding planning!
