Are you following TikTok wedding trends? If so, I’ve got some thoughts for you!
To be honest, I’m not a TikTok person. It all just seems too much for me. However, I know that TikTok is a super popular platform that many, many people enjoy scrolling. And, I know that there are quite a few wedding related accounts out there, just sharing away. Because of this, I want to weigh in on TikTok trends featured in a Brides article I recently came across.
The thing is, not all of the TikTok wedding trends I’m talking about are actually trends. Some have been around for a long time. I’ll get into that, though. Some are new, some are old, some are great, some are totally wrong. The key here, though, is to think about if these trends are right for your wedding. If you feel like they are, go for them. If not, don’t worry about it.
My Thoughts On 11 Tiktok Wedding Trends
As mentioned above, this post is going to go into my thoughts on eleven TikTok wedding trends. My thoughts are just that. My thoughts, my opinions, and all about what I think. At the end of the day, you do you. Don’t do something at your wedding because it’s trendy, or your favorite Tik Tocker (is that what they are called?!) recommends it. Use your own judgement, and plan accordingly.
Let’s get into it!
1. ASKING THE OFFICIANT TO MOVE OUT OF YOUR FIRST KISS SHOT
Okay, let’s kick it off with a big one. Asking your officiant to move out of the way when you and your new spouse have your first kiss.
Honestly, this should be a staple at every single wedding. It shouldn’t be a trend at all.
We did this at our wedding, and the photos turned out way better. I mean, honestly, who wants to have a picture of you and your spouse kissing while someone is standing right behind you? I would bet no one does.
So, yes, this is a huge “trend” to do at your wedding. Ask your officiant to step out of the way when you have your first kiss. Have them write it down. Ask your maid of honor to remind them if they don’t.
Verdict: Absolutely make it happen.
2. FIRST LOOKS WITH YOUR DAD
Oh my, can we talk about wedding trends that have to do with dads? They get me every time.
Because my dad passed away before my wedding, I have a special place in my heart for wedding day dads. And, traditions and trends that have to do with wedding day dads. So, yes, if you want to have a special first look with your dad, make it happen. The photos will be beautiful and the moment will be very special.
Verdict: Go for it, if your dad is at your wedding.
3. FIRST LOOKS WITH YOUR BRIDESMAIDS
Again with the TikTok wedding trends that have to do with first looks.
The thing about a first look with your bridesmaids is that it will be over the top. And, I don’t entirely understand it. I mean, the girls are getting ready with you, theoretically. Of course, they may only see the hair and makeup, and not the dress yet, but still. They get a little preview.
That said, if you want to have a first look with your bridesmaids, or your groomsmen, or your mom, or your kid, or your fiancé, go for it. It’s all good, and it’s all special.
Verdict: First looks are fun, exciting, and special. Have them with whomever you want.
4. LISTING THE WOMEN’S NAMES FIRST ON YOUR INVITES
Let’s dial back the TikTok wedding trends a little, to when you actually plan your wedding.
One trend right now is to list the women’s names first on your wedding invitations. Traditionally, men’s names come first. In fact, many women’s names aren’t listed at all if they are married. Invites may be addressed to as “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith”, or along those lines.
To buck tradition, many couples these days are opting to list the ladies first on their invites. And, I say, why not? If you feel funny about it for some guests, go old school. For others, go with the new. If anyone gets offended, I think that may be their problem.
Verdict: If you like this one, go for it.
5. ENTERING YOUR RECEPTION BEFORE YOUR WEDDING PARTY
If you’ve been to enough weddings, you may have noticed that the wedding party usually enters the reception ahead of the newlyweds. And, it can be a big production.
There’s a TikTok wedding trend right now where the newlyweds enter first. This way, the couple can clap for and cheer on their wedding party as they enter. Of course, this may be a bit anti-climatic, as the guests are there for the newlyweds, not the wedding party. It can still be sweet, though.
Verdict: I think there are pro’s and con’s here. Honestly, I like the “traditional” way where the wedding party enters first, or only the newlyweds enter with a big to-do. But, again, you do you.
6. WEDDING PARTY ENTERS YOUR WEDDING RECEPTION WITH A TRENDY DANCE
A quick scroll on any social media platform and you’ll see that wedding party dances are among the most popular TikTok wedding trends.
I’m not here for it, though. Unless your wedding party is filled with actual dancers.
To be honest, I think it’s a bit cheesy. And, if your wedding party isn’t totally on board, they may feel a certain way about the request. It requires them to learn some choreography, put themselves out there, and entertain guests right after the ceremony. I find it a bit much. However, if your wedding party wants to do it, it’s their idea, and they are comfortable with the request, it’s all in fun and it’s all good.
Verdict: Only do this if your wedding party is 100% on board. Any hesitation, and I would skip it.
7. GIVING YOUR BOUQUET TO THE COUPLE MARRIED THE LONGEST DURING A DANCE
I love this TikTok wedding trend.
To be clear, this isn’t really a new wedding trend. In fact, I did this at my wedding, which was years before TikTok became a thing. The whole bouquet toss thing seemed played out and archaic, and this was a really sweet way to honor our guests.
To do this, we played a song and asked all couples to come out to the dance floor. Every few seconds, we asked couples who had been together less than a certain number of years to stop dancing. By the end of the song, the couple who was left had been together for more than fifty years. They got my bouquet, and it was very well received.
Verdict: If you are looking for a bouquet toss alternative, this is an excellent idea.
8. ASKING OUT OF STATE FRIENDS TO WEAR THE SAME COLOR (LIKE BLUE)
I had never heard of this TikTok wedding trend until I read the Brides article. It involves asking people who traveled for your wedding to wear a certain color.
I guess the thought is that those out-of-town travelers will be easy to spot? And they kind of get a special designation or recognition. And, if you take photos with them, the photos will look cool? Look, I don’t really get it. These guests are already doing a lot to attend your wedding, with the travel and all. Asking them to dress a certain way, unless they are in your wedding, seems strange.
Verdict: This is one of the TikTok wedding trends I would skip.
9. ASKING YOUR PARENTS TO JOIN YOUR FIRST DANCE
Are you a little nervous about your first dance? Not sure if you want to dance in front of everyone? Why not ask others to join you? Like your parents?
This can be a sweet thing to do at your wedding, if your parents are open to it. It may be weird if your parents aren’t into dancing. Or, if one set of your parents are divorced and bitter, while the other set is super happy. In short, the circumstances need to be right. You know?
Verdict: If you want your parents to join, and your parents want to join, go for it. Otherwise, skip this trend.
10. MAKING A QUILT GUEST BOOK
This is a wedding trend that is so thoughtful, but requires some extra effort afterwards, so it all depends on your preference.
Asking guests to sign squares of fabric at your wedding will be the easy part. Fabric can come from anywhere, and guests are likely already expecting to sign a guest book or something anyway. The afterwards part is what gets me with this trend. You actually need to turn that fabric into a quilt if you want it to be meaningful, right? And not everyone knows how to do that, or has the motivation. Yes, you can keep the fabric in a box for the rest of your life, but that’s not the intent. The follow through has to be there.
Verdict: Super cute idea, but needs follow through. If you don’t think you can make the quilt happen, I’d skip it.
11. SIMPLE DESSERTS AND CAKE, OR POTLUCK DESSERTS
There is a whole movement away from large wedding cakes these days. The costs, the logistics, and personal preference is driving couples towards wedding dessert alternatives.
Because of this, TikTok wedding trends are highlighting what you can do instead of cake for your wedding day dessert. Simple desserts and cake are popular these days. So is hosting a potluck. I mean, there is something special about asking some of your baker guests to bring their most loved dessert to your wedding. It can save money, and make many of your guests feel like they are a part of your wedding.
Verdict: If you are looking to get away from a large wedding cake, explore keeping it simple or going potluck-style. I have no issues with this trend.
