Need to know about wedding dress codes? I’ve got you covered!
It’s not uncommon to receive an invitation for a wedding that indicates what the dress code is. Ranging from white tie to informal, and everything in between, at first glance it can seem rather straightforward. That is, until you start to try to figure out what wear. That’s where things start getting a bit confusing.
The issue is that dress codes can mean different things to different people, if you’re not careful. One person’s black tie can be another person’s dressy casual. This could lead you to attend a wedding wearing something that isn’t quite matching the vibe. And, this can make a person feel kind of out of place or embarrassed. It’s not ideal. So, let’s try to avoid that for you, or your guests, shall we?
Wedding Dress Codes – What Do They Really Mean?
This post is going to give you details on wedding dress codes. What the main ones are. What the main ones mean. Examples for both men and women on what they can wear to a wedding that has a certain dress code. This post is meant for those planning a wedding (and the subsequent dress code), and for those attending a wedding (and trying to figure out what to wear). Basically, it’s meant for everyone.
Let’s get into it!
ARE WEDDING DRESS CODES REQUIRED FOR ALL WEDDINGS?
Let’s pause for a moment and talk about wedding dress codes. Are they required for your wedding?
No. They are not.
The thing about wedding dress codes is that they are a kind of nice to have. Nice to have for your wedding vision. Nice to have as a guide for your guests. However, they can become a big source of stress if everyone isn’t careful. Too fancy and your guests will have to spend money and time on an outfit. Too vague and informal and your guests may all show up in jeans and overalls.
The key is for wedding dress codes to be communicated, match the vibe of the venue, and fit for the couple.
That said, let’s get into the dress codes!
WHITE TIE DRESS CODE
If you are invited to a wedding with a white tie dress code, it’s gonna be fancy, honey.
White tie is the most formal you can get. This is the typical dress code if you are going to an event with dignitaries, the opera, the president, or royalty. To properly prepare for this dress code, you likely need to go shopping or find a service where you can rent your outfit. Don’t wait on this, either. It’s likely taken very seriously.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR A WHITE TIE DRESS CODE
For women, formal floor length gowns are expected. They should also properly accessorize with the right jewelry, shoes, and clutch purses. Women should also have their hair and makeup done, perhaps professionally. Men are usually required to wear tuxedos with white shirts, vests, and nice shoes. They may also need tails on the tuxes, and gloves.
BLACK TIE DRESS CODE
Black tie is a tier below white tie, yet still very fancy. If you are invited to a wedding with a black tie dress code, it’s going to be a very formal event.
The beauty of a black tie event is that there is more flexibility with outfits than white tie. Think of an event like the Oscars. I’m not saying all black tie affairs are like the Oscars, but stick with me. The Oscars boast a variety of outfits. Some women are in dresses, others are wearing pant suits. Some men are in tuxedos, others in nice suits. There’s some leeway.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR A BLACK TIE DRESS CODE
For women, black tie typically encourages long gowns. Nice cocktail dresses may also be acceptable, and slit legs if they are in style at the time. Some women may opt to wear suits. Men are usually expected to wear tuxedos and nice shoes.
FORMAL DRESS CODE
Formal is a pretty common dress code for many weddings. This is especially true if the wedding is held at a nice venue.
If you see a formal dress code on an invitation, it implies that you should dress up. Fairly nice, but not fancy-fancy, if you know what I mean. This is where most women can pull out one of their nicer dresses and be just fine. Men may have a suit they can wear. You don’t have to go floor-length, and you don’t have to wear a tuxedo.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR A FORMAL DRESS CODE
For women, you have lots of options. Floor length dresses, as mentioned above. Cocktail dresses, or pant suits will probably fit very well with the wedding. Men should wear a suit, or a tuxedo, if they prefer. Everyone should wear nice shoes and accessorize appropriately.
COCKTAIL DRESS CODE
Cocktail dress codes are also quite popular for weddings. It’s dressing nice, or elegant, but still fairly comfortable.
Cocktail attire implies that you get to have a bit of fun with your outfit, but can still match the weather. This means that if you are going to a summer wedding in the heat, shorter dresses are fine. Men should wear a suit, but are welcome to remove the jacket if it’s warm.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR A COCKTAIL DRESS CODE
Women can have a lot of fun with a cocktail dress code. Long dresses are okay, but cocktail dress codes lean more to shorter tea-length dresses. Men should wear suits, but they don’t have to be black.
DRESSY CASUAL DRESS CODE
A dressy casual dress code can be a bit confusing. If you are going to a wedding that has this listed as the dress code, I would lean in to the type of venue you are going to, and the weather, to decide what to wear.
For example, dressy casual means that you are a dressed up version of comfortable, but still fairly comfortable. If the venue or weather will be cold, guests can wear heavier fabrics and layers. Warmer venues or weather means that flowy outfits or slacks are appropriate.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR A DRESSY CASUAL DRESS CODE
For woman, it’s about matching the temperature where you are. This may mean longer dresses, or skirts with a top, or even a pant suit. Men can wear a suit and tie, or they can wear slacks and a nice shirt. Everyone should have decently nice footwear on.
CASUAL DRESS CODE
Casual is well, casual.
What would you wear if you were meeting a friend for a nice dinner? Or a laid back event? Likely not tank tops and flip flops, but maybe comfortable dresses or khaki’s with collared shirts. For a casual event, I would lean more towards “fancy” but not too fancy.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR A CASUAL DRESS CODE
Women should feel free to wear nice sundresses, skirts, and sandals to a wedding with a casual dress code. Men should try to wear slacks, khaki’s, and collared shirts. Ties and jackets are optional. Footwear should be appropriate but still nice.
INFORMAL DRESS CODE
Informal kind of implies anything goes.
I would use your own judgement if you happen to see this as a dress code for a wedding. It likely does not mean wearing your pajamas, but it may mean jeans are okay. Maybe imagine what you would wear to a barbeque and go with that.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR AN INFORMAL DRESS CODE
Women should still feel free to wear dresses that are comfortable and weather appropriate. They may also opt to wear jeans and a cute top or sweater. Men can wear slacks or jeans with a collared shirt. Avoid ripped clothes, or anything too casual. If you’d wear it to bed, don’t wear it to a wedding.
OTHER DRESS CODES
Some weddings have dress codes that are not that common.
These are the weddings where everyone is asked to wear a certain color. Or, a costume. Maybe you’re going to a wedding where they want everyone to wear their best pajamas (or their worst, I don’t know). In any case, it should be clear what the request is so you can match it. Themed or concept dress codes can be dressed up, or dressed down, so they can be confusing at first glance. If it’s not clear what to wear, it’s best to clarify with the engaged couple what the dress code means and for them to give examples of what would be appropriate.
THOUGHTS ON WEDDING DRESS CODES
Friends, wedding dress codes can be very confusing if you’re not familiar with them. And, even when you start to understand what you’re supposed to wear, if they are too fancy or too casual they can cause some stress and uncertainty. Do your best to decipher what the dress code means to you, and don’t hesitate to reach out to the couple if you’re unsure. At the end of the day, as long as you’re wearing clothes, it’s all good. Happy wedding planning!
