Your wedding day hair is a big deal. Ideally, your wedding hair will look exactly as you want it to, only better. The thing is, only so much can be in our control. And, even if you have an amazing plan, plans can go to the wayside really quick. Wedding hair disasters can completely derail your wedding day, leaving you stressed, exhausted, and ready to throw your hair up in a bun and be done with it.

All of that said, wedding hair disasters don’t have to ruin your wedding day. And, some aren’t even disasters at all. Some “disasters” are just things that we can deal with and then move on. Others can be prevented by making wise choices and planning in the right way. So whether you’re having a disaster of indecision, issues with your hair stylist, hair accessory disasters, or issues with your hair behaving itself, action can be made to help lessen what’s going on.

This post is going to share with you wedding hair disasters and what to do about them. As mentioned above, not every wedding hair disaster is going to be catastrophic for everyone. Some may see some of these things as the end of the world, while others won’t stress one bit. No matter your tolerance for wedding-related issues, the advice is the same. Your wedding stress is real, and you have the ability to deal with issues as they come up in a way that makes sense for you.

YOU CAN’T DECIDE IF YOU WANT TO WEAR YOUR HAIR UP OR DOWN

Let’s start off with an easy wedding hair disaster. How your hair will look on your wedding day.

If you have long hair, you have options. Maybe you want your hair down. Or up. Or somewhere in between. Personally, I decided to have my hair down, with extensions, and pinned out of my face, but if I was getting married in a warm season I may have chosen to have it totally up so it didn’t bother me. Decisions, decisions.

Here’s what you do. Try out both looks before your wedding. Choose which one feels right. Or, find a happy medium where you have your hair down for your ceremony and then a friend or your stylist pins it up for your reception. Pick a “main path” and then give yourself grace to mix it up during your wedding. Either way you’ll look beautiful.

YOU DON’T LIKE YOUR HAIR STYLIST

Am I saying the inside voice out loud?

What do you do if you don’t like your hair stylist?

I mean, it happens. Maybe you called a salon, booked with them, and they’ve paired you up with someone you just don’t vibe with. Or, your regular stylist can’t make it at the last minute and they are sending in a replacement you don’t particularly trust with your hair. What do you do?

The first line of defense here is to give yourself lots of time to find the right hair person for your wedding. Do trials with them. Get to know them. Get to trust them. And then have a back up plan, just in case. Maybe a friend can step in if your preferred person is unavailable last minute. Or another professional. Take control of this risk, well before your wedding.

YOUR VEIL IS SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE

Have you ever put a wedding veil on before? For me, when I was picking one out, they were hit or miss on how comfortable they are.

When picking out a veil, yes, you want it to match your outfit. But, you also want it to be comfortable. If it’s not comfortable you may start fussing with it throughout your wedding, and, gasp, mess with your hair style. This can create a wedding hair disaster that you may not want to deal with.

So, make sure your veil works for you. That it can be secured in your hair with a way that is comfortable, and easy to remove. Do a little trial ahead of your wedding, too.

YOU CAN’T FIND AN IMPORTANT HAIR PIECE

True story time.

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding over a decade ago. The bride was super cool, but she was pregnant, and understandably stressed out at her wedding. She gave all of her bridesmaids a hair piece to wear during the wedding, and, well, I lost mine. On the wedding day. I’m not sure where it went or what happened to it, but it was gone. Eventually I had to fess up to the bride, and she was understanding about it, but still, it was a little daunting to admit I lost it.

If you happen to loose an important hair piece on a wedding day, don’t worry. It will be okay. Maybe bring a back up, just in case. Remind yourself that it’s not the end of the world, and there’s always a solution. It happens.

YOU DYED YOUR HAIR RIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING AND HATE IT

Have you ever colored your hair and thought, “I don’t like this”?

I think everyone who colors their hair has that thought from time to time.

Most of the time it’s not a big deal. Give it a week or two and you can change the color. Or, leave it to grow or fade anyway. It your color is off right before your wedding, it’s time to do something about it, and fast, though.

The first line of defense here is to prevent coloring your hair with new dyes or new colors, in the weeks before your wedding. If the damage is already done, get an emergency appointment with a salon to see if they can fix it. You can also consider giving your hair a gloss to make the color more rich and change it up a bit. Worst comes to worst, wear a wig. Just kidding! You’ve got this handled.

YOUR HAIR IS SUPER FRIZZY

Does your hair get frizzy from time to time? If so, prevention is the name of the game to prevent this wedding hair disaster.

To prevent frizzy hair you’ve got to use the right smoothing products. Be sure to test them out before your wedding to see how your hair responds. It will also help if you’re able to simulate the temperature it will be at your wedding, and the humidity, if possible, if your wedding is out of town.

Beyond smoothing products, beware of hot water or overusing hot tools as they can fry hair. New shampoos may also cause frizziness, so stick to what you know your hair likes in the weeks before your wedding. Last line of defense? The right pillow case can keep your hair smooth. Mulberry silk is best, if you ask me.

YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL BE VERY WINDY

Wind is the enemy of a good hair day, right?

Right.

If you are getting married on a day that is very windy, or at a location that is very windy, you may want to plan ahead, if possible. This means planning on a hair style where your hair is pinned back. The pinning should be very secure so the wind doesn’t bother it. If you didn’t know it was going to be windy, and are somewhat surprised by it, you have two choices. Either pin, or just deal with it. With some good hair spray your hair should stay in place. Of course, if your wedding will be indoors the wind won’t matter that much.

Another tip is regarding your veil. Wind can pull at it and mess with your hair, too. If you have the time, put little weights on the bottom of your veil so the wind won’t be that bad. Simply sew them into the veil and it will be a bit more secure.

YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL BE REALLY RAINY

If your hair is anything like mine, rain will ruin the whole look, real quick.

To preserve your hair, and avoid rain related wedding hair disasters, it’s all about coverage. Ideally, if you have to be outside, you’ll have something sheltering your hair from the rain. Be sure to stock up on pretty or clear umbrellas, too. Not only will they protect your hair but they can be really cool in photos.

If you do get your hair wet on your wedding day, see if you can find a blow dryer for a quick fix. As someone who had a rainy day wedding, it’s not ideal, but it will be okay.

YOU HATE YOUR WEDDING HAIR STYLE

Let’s pretend it’s your wedding day. Your makeup is set. Your hair is done. And, you are not feeling your hair at all.

What do you do? It’s a wedding hair disaster that is super common and no one wants to find themselves dealing with.

Like other tips in this post, the first line of defense is prevention. This means that you do a test run ahead of your wedding. Have a plan for what your hair will look like. Take pictures of your vision, and the end result, so everyone is on the same page. This will help.

Other than that, if your hair is done and it’s awful, speak up. Let the hair stylist know, in a respectful way, what you would like changed. If possible, plan ahead just in case you will need extra time to get your hair right. Stay calm, there’s always a way to fix things.  

FOR THE WORST WEDDING HAIR DISASTERS, TURN TO “HAIL MARY” SOLUTIONS

Alright, let’s just throw everything out with the kitchen sink. What do you do when you’re in the midst of major wedding hair disasters and nothing is going right?

Let’s get extreme here. If the worst of the worst has happened, you do have options. For example, you can wear a wig. No shame in that. Or, cover your hair with a big veil. You can also wear a hat, a scarf, or anything that covers your hair and makes you feel beautiful. Worst case scenario, and you can pay a professional to photoshop the heck out of your photos. I promise you, it will all work out.

THOUGHTS ON WEDDING HAIR DISASTERS

Friends, wedding hair disasters happen. For the most part, prevention and common sense are the ways to make sure you don’t have to deal with them. Be cautious of using new dyes or products right before your wedding. Plan ahead for frizzy hair, and always meet and practice with your hair stylist ahead of your wedding. Take lots of photos of how you want your hair to look, but be nimble in case you need to change course due to wind or rain. You’ve got this! Happy wedding planning!
