Which Is The Best Season To Get Married In?  

When you choose your ideal date, you’re probably asking yourselves, which is the best season to get married in?

It’s important to understand that the answer to this question is entirely up to the situation that each couple finds themselves in.  Different people have different preferences, and your location can also play a huge role in this decision.  For example, someone who loves cool weather and lives in a warm climate may think that winter is ideal for a wedding.  However, someone else who loves warm weather and lives in a cold location may think that summer is the best for them.  Factors such as demand, availability, and costs can also come into play.

There are some generalities that can help couples sort out the best season for them, though.  In general, winter weddings will be colder than summer weddings (in North America, at least).  Also, wedding venues tend to have more demand in the summer than in the spring.  Additionally, holidays and family commitments are usually more prevalent in the winter than in any of the others seasons.

I will go into all the considerations a couple will need to make depending on the season they want to hold their wedding.  Depending on the couple, some of these considerations may be deal breakers, or they may tip the opinion towards a certain season over another.  Ultimately, choosing the best season for your wedding will depend on what you enjoy, where you live, and what you envision for your wedding day.

IS SPRING THE BEST SEASON FOR A WEDDING?

Even though New Years technically starts in Winter, I like to think of spring as a new year. 

In the springtime, everything is blooming, and it feels refreshed outside.  The weather starts to heat up and the days get longer and longer.  It’s no wonder why spring is often a popular time to have a wedding, especially in May and June. 

Best Parts Of A Spring Wedding:

• Spring tends to be pretty low on holidays, other than Easter.  This means that guests may be more willing to travel and not have other commitments in the way of coming to your wedding.
• Once you get into spring, the weather starts to warm up.  Snow becomes less and less likely, and it becomes more comfortable to wear sleeveless clothes again.  Conversely, it is also easy to go with sleeves, shawls, or any other type of style you want to wear at your wedding.
• Pastel colors are so beautiful, and absolutely appropriate for a spring wedding. 
• Blooming flowers and plants are gorgeous.  They make for excellent backdrops for anyone’s wedding photos.  This may save you money on both florals and décor. 

Worst Parts Of A Spring Wedding:

• The weather is still unpredictable.  In most parts of North America, rainy or cool weather can happen at any point in the spring, and completely derail an outside wedding. So, if your wedding is outside, a Plan B will have to be thought of before the wedding day, just in case.
• If you are planning on getting married outside, in nature, there may be a lot of annoying bugs in late May and June.
• God Bless You!  Allergies are rampant in the spring, and may put a damper on everyone’s experience if they aren’t feeling well and you’re outside.
• Getting married in late spring is very popular, meaning that vendors will be in high demand.  It may be more difficult to book them, and you may have to start paying peak pricing for services. 

IS SUMMER THE BEST SEASON FOR A WEDDING?

Summer is a super popular season to get married in, and for good reason.

For most locations, the weather during the summer is very predictable.  Plus, the vision for weddings is more flexible. Almost any theme or motif would be appropriate for the summer.  There are some downsides, though, such as uncomfortable weather and peak travel demands, but those can be worked around if you plan ahead.

Best Parts Of A Summer Wedding:

• No matter where you are, summer weather tends to be dependable.  Yes, it may rain in some parts of the USA and Canada, but with proper planning you can still keep guests dry.  The temperatures outside tend to be warmer than in any other time of year, and it’s easy enough to plan for a beautiful day.
• Guests are usually ready and prepared to travel in the summer.  If you give them enough notice, they will make your wedding part of their summer travel plans.  Kids aren’t in school, a lot of businesses slow down, plus it’s more convenient to travel when it’s not snowing. 
• Summer food is on point.  Seasonal fruits, fresh meats, and local cheeses are all easy to obtain in the summer and your wedding food will be delicious. 
• The days are long and bright.  Long days mean that you’ll be able to start a little later in the day, have lots of natural light for photos, and reduce the need for lighting.
• More flowers are in season.  You’ll get to showcase fresh, vibrant flowers that stand out during your wedding.  Plus, since they may be in peak season, the prices are more favorable. 

Worst Parts Of A Summer Wedding:

• Heat waves can really put a damper on the experience for guests and the couple getting married.  Wedding clothes can be super heavy, and no one wants their hair to wilt and their makeup to melt because it’s so hot. 
• Guests may be really busy with travel plans in the summer, so it’s important to give them lots of notice about the wedding date so they can make your wedding a priority early on. 
• Wedding season will be in full swing during the summer, so vendors will be at peak prices and high demand.  Book yours early to make sure you have the best. 

IS FALL THE BEST SEASON FOR A WEDDING?

For most of North America, fall is probably the most popular time to get married, especially early September and into October.  The weather is still nice, the colors are amazing, and there isn’t as much going on with travel and holidays as some other seasons. 

I may be biased when I say this, but I do really love a fall wedding.  In fact, I had a fall wedding.  There were lots of perks to it (and some downsides), so let’s go over them!

Best Parts Of A Fall Wedding:

• Fall foliage is so gorgeous.  It really provides some amazing photo opportunities.  Couples may even be able to cut down on décor because the fall is so beautiful.
• Fall weather is still nice, but cooler than in the spring.  This means that you won’t have to worry so much about a heat wave, for most locations.  Even if it does get a little warm, the days are a bit shorter, so it should cool off earlier than with a summer wedding.
• With fall colors, you have a bit more opportunity to add drama to your wedding theme.  Deep purples, reds, and greens are all appropriate for a Fall wedding (though keep in mind, you can do what you want with any color, at any time of year!).
• Demand for weddings drops in November, so you may be able to take advantage of off season pricing and get a deal from your venue or vendors. 

Worst Parts Of A Fall Wedding:

• Fall is typically the worst time of year for many people, financially.  They may have just traveled and splurged over the summer, and have to plan for the Holidays.  This may impact their ability to travel to your wedding.
• Cooler weather and changing temperatures can really mess with your skin.  You’ll have to be very intentional about hydrating and skincare leading up to your wedding day.
• Depending on where you are, you may encounter a surprise rainy day or even snow in the fall.  This means that when you book your venue and set your date, you’ll have to plan for bad weather, just in case. 

IS WINTER THE BEST SEASON FOR A WEDDING?

Winter weddings can be absolutely breathtaking if they are done right.  This season brings with it excitement, thoughts of family, and some awesome decorations.  If you live in a location that is snowy, you can take advantage of amazing photo opportunities and truly embrace the season. 

There are also some downsides to a winter wedding, but hopefully none of them come as a surprise.  Let’s go over them!

Best Parts Of A Winter Wedding:

• Snow can be really fun for photos.  With some warm accessories, a shelter if you need it, and an experienced photographer, your partner and you can star in some amazing images.
• Winter wedding food is so tasty.  You can totally go for it with cozy drinks, rich desserts, and heavy comfort food. 
• Venues and vendors are typically less expensive in the winter, so you may be able to enjoy some lower prices. 
• A lot of venues are already decorated in the winter, meaning that you can utilize their stuff and worry less about creating, buying, or bringing your own.
• If you want to have a Christmas or Holiday theme, no one will mind.  In fact, many people may be expecting it. 

Worst Parts Of A Winter Wedding:

• Winter is not the ideal season to have a wedding outdoors.  You’ll definitely want to plan on an inside reception, and maybe an inside ceremony.
• Many guests may have holiday travel plans, so you’ll have to let them know about your wedding early on to ensure they can attend. 
• Bad weather and snow can complicate travel plans and make it more difficult to do just about anything.  Simple things like transporting items and driving across town may even be impacted.  You’ll have to plan on giving yourself extra time for these things, just in case.
• The days are very short, so if you plan on natural light photos to be taken, your wedding should probably start a little earlier in the day. 
• Many popular wedding flowers are not in season, so you may have to pay a little extra to have them at your wedding.
