If you are getting married, chances are you want to choose wedding day accessories that are perfect for you.
Bride, groom, somewhere in between, accessories are pretty much always a staple at weddings. Whether it’s a necklace, bracelet, earrings, or even a tie, belt, or something unexpected, accessories are always up for consideration when picking out your wedding day outfit. Yes, your gown or suit will be your staple piece, but there are almost always add-ons.
The thing about accessories is that they should enhance your wedding day look without ruining it. You should be confident and comfortable with what you choose for your wedding day accessories, and not feel regrets later on. Accessories are more than just throwing extra items on your body. They are about further self-expression. On your wedding day, when it comes to your look, self-expression is what it’s all about.
How To Choose Wedding Day Accessories That Are Perfect For You
This post is going to go over how to choose wedding day accessories that are perfect for you. As a compliment to this post, I’d like to reference a blog post I wrote a few months ago, featuring a wedding jewelry designer. There are further tips in that piece about choosing wedding day accessories that you can love and cherish well after your wedding day.
As always, pick and choose the tips that work the best for you. Accessories are a fun and easy part of wedding planning. You can always change them or take them off, mid-wedding, if you want.
Let’s get into it!
CHOOSE WEDDING DAY ACCESSORIES THAT FEEL LIKE “YOU”
First things first. You’ll want to choose wedding day accessories that feel like “you”.
What does this mean, exactly? Well, start with what you like to wear in your everyday life. Do you like big, bold pieces with a lot of color? Or are you more into dainty jewelry that others can barely see? Your wedding day accessories should be a derivative of what you usually like to wear. Maybe they are more expensive, borrowed from a loved one, or bought specifically for your wedding. Or, maybe they are the jewelry or pieces you wear all the time anyway. In either case, you should feel very comfortable sporting them.
WEAR ACCESSORIES THAT MATCH EACH OTHER
When it comes to your overall look, it’s important that your accessories match each other.
It’s all about cohesiveness. Your jewelry should be made from the same color metal. Maybe there is a cohesive size, or the same types of jewels in them. If you have a brown belt, it should be a complement to your tie color. Maybe you have pearl earrings on, and are also wearing a pearl necklace. Or, perhaps you have a little gold in your gown and a gold bracelet to go with it. Some thoughtfulness will go a long way with your overall look.
USE YOUR GOWN TO NARROW DOWN YOUR WEDDING ACCESSORIES
I could probably write a whole blog post about this, but one tip to help you choose perfect wedding day accessories is to look at the gown you’re wearing.
For example, very white wedding gowns may not do well matching with gold jewelry. However, gowns with a little pink in them may be the perfect way to showcase rose gold. And, off-white gowns match gold just fine. If your gown is incredibly white, pearls may be a better compliment because they are also very white. Additionally, your gown may have buttons or extra embellishments that you can use to find items that match it.
DON’T OVERDO IT WITH THE ACCESSORIES – LESS CAN BE MORE
Have you ever heard that when you get dressed in the morning you should always take one thing off before you leave the house? Well, the same can be said about wedding accessories.
Don’t feel the pressure to overdo it, even if you’re the kind of person to accessorize like crazy. Yes, it’s okay to have a necklace, bracelet, and earrings. Or a pocket handkerchief, belt, and tie. Wear what works for you, but remember that you don’t need to wear a ton of pieces to look “put together”. It’s okay to pick your favorites, keep it simple, and skip the urge to accessorize like crazy.
LOOK INTO WAYS TO KEEP WARM (OR COOL) BY WEARING THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES
Some accessories really do serve a purpose other than helping us “look good”.
For example, a shawl, pashmina, or wrap can help you keep warm on a cool fall or winter wedding day. Conversely, a fan can help keep you cool during a warm wedding day. Other items, like parasols, can also come in handy when the weather is less than ideal or you’re in the direct sun. Think about useful items for you, and how they can be utilized on your wedding day to look good and also be functional.
CHOOSE YOUR NECKLACES (OR LACK THEREOF) BASED ON YOUR GOWN
Back to jewelry specific wedding day accessories, let’s talk about necklaces.
I have a few tips.
For example, if you have a high neck on your wedding gown, you may want to skip wearing a necklace altogether. It might not be necessary, and could make your gown seem a bit cluttered. Conversely, a gown that allows your neck to be bare may look good with a simple or a statement necklace, depending on your style. If your dress has a lot of embellishments, a rule of thumb is to keep your necklace simple. If your dress is simple, you can take more liberties with a statement necklace.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT HAIR ACCESSORIES
If you feel like you’re not accessorizing enough for your wedding day, remember that your hair is also a place where you can accessorize.
Take your veil, for example. Most brides choose to wear a veil on their wedding days. When, and if, they take their veil off at some point, brides can place another piece in their hair if they wish. This piece can be just for decoration, or even functional if the bride wants to mix up her hair style for her reception. There are lots of fun ways to decorate your wedding hair, with tiaras, little clips, pins, or even hair pearls to match your gown.
ONLY CHOOSE WEDDING DAY ACCESSORIES THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE IN
Last tip! When you choose wedding day accessories, the number one rule is that you are comfortable in them.
Now, I’m not just talking about wearing accessories that will not leave you sore the next day. This is true, of course. No one wants their neck to hurt from a heavy necklace or their scalp to be sore because their tiara tore into it all night. I’m also talking about wearing wedding day accessories that you know you look good in. That make you feel good. Accessories that enhance your look, that you will cherish well after your wedding. When you find the right wedding accessories, you just know they are right for you.
THOUGHTS ON HOW TO CHOOSE WEDDING DAY ACCESSORIES
Friends, there are lots of tips out there to help you choose your wedding day accessories. Remember to look at what you’re already wearing to either narrow down your options or for inspiration. Additionally, choose accessories that match each other, feel like “you”, and you are comfortable wearing. Wedding day accessories are an often overlooked, yet important, part of your wedding day look. Take your time, and choose wisely. You’ve got this! Happy wedding planning!
